I saw Rocky and cried like a baby all the way through it...it was a great way to wrap it up, Jay, I couldn't agree more!

Not sure how much it meant to those who didn't see the first; but a triumpg of the human spirit story is like Rocky's is just so powerful and universal you have to love it.

I think you're right. Just how many people *still* run up the steps of the art museum in Philly? The original Rocky was made how many years ago and people are still doing it. It's a movie that I think just stays with people. I remember being little and seeing it in the movie theater and people cheered.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Yesterday, sick in bed, I watched way too many documentaries on Hitler. I have a tendancy to do this.

Last night, though, I caught The Ex-Mrs. Bradford and loved it!

Today I am watching more Nero Wolfe from my Christmas gift boxed set.

Jean Arthur.

I finally got to see If You Could Only Cook, with Herbert Marshall! I've seen mention of it in my screwball comedy books for years. And another, I think More Than A Secretary.

Thank God for screwball comedy.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

OK, I have got a BlockBuster pass that let's me rent all the movies I want with the exception of only 2 videos out at a time. so i just saw "The Illusionist" with Edward Norton (looked HOT in the movie) which was really cool. Then I saw "The Night Caller" with Robin Williams and all I can say is L A M E !!

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (1936) Another William Powell gem from his greatest year, 1936. The chemistry with Jean Arthur was okay, but this is the kind of movie I'm gonna watch if it's on TV. I'd even buy it on DVD. Nice Deco apartment in this one, too. It also happened to be the last movie directed by Stephen Roberts, who died of a heart attack at age 41 in 1936. Roberts also directed 1935's Star of Midnight which starred Powell and Ginger Rogers.

Okay, I've decided I really like this movie, and you will too, that is, if you liked The Thin Man series.

Absolutely adored The Ex-Mrs. Bradford!!!

Also recently Tivod and viewed, Designing Woman, Lauren Bacall & Gregory Peck, 1957. The year Bogie died.

I just love it. It's one of the good ones.

Mrs. Parker & the Vicious Circle (1994) Was Dot Parker really that comatose??? After all of the things I've heard from her many champions at this site, I was shocked to see how she was portrayed in the film! Only Campbell Scott added any spice as our beloved Mr. Benchley.

How was it? I've never seen it, but I love the song.

Yes - DO tell. I heard it was a bit grim, focussing on the tragedies in her life, and not much on her musical life.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

The acting was amazing but it jumped around , lots of flashbacks I guess because to go sequential would be too depressing. I would have liked to have heard the title song more. The staging and visual look was beautiful. More like a film than a movie.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I saw some of those lovely Teddington Studios films (English studio owned by Warner Bros.). They were charming. And though the last one was made in '42, it was as 30s and Deco as can be. The Blitz probably kept them from commissioning new sets, costumes & so forth.

Tomorrow TCM is showing Vivacious Lady. 40's comedy with Ginger Rogers & Jimmy Stewart. I saw it once, years ago. Stewart plays a college prof who "rescues" his (cousin?) from Rogers' showgirl (oh, the horror!) only to fall for her himself...

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I've been watching the Andy Hardy movies on TCM for the past two days. Unfortunately I haven't been able to sit and watch any of them in their entirety. Darnit! I'll have to rent them all now. But I can see why they were so popular. Talk about longing for a lifestyle that probably never existed. I wish we could go back to that sort of warm, familial love and attention instead of everyone sort of sitting around the tv talking in short sentences. I wonder if throwing out the tv would do the trick?

The Man Who Came to Dinner.

My but this movie cracks me up every time.

"Oh don't eat candy, it's very bad for you!"
"My great aunt Jennifer ate a whole box of candy every day of her life. She lived to be 102, and when she had been dead three days, she looked better than you do now."

I watched UP! last night. Cute and remarkably engaging. I got a little misty eyed at the beginning. Great retro-styling for the villain as well.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Inglorious Basterds.
There seemed to be some glaring holes in the 'plot' and it could have have been a good hour longer but a very satisfying film nonetheless (maybe the BBFC did their usual hatchet job).
A revenge film in essence but without the need to illustrate the initial crime that required avenging as we are all already familiar with that.
Gratuitous Nazi killing is a genre that seems somewhat neglected and I, for one, would like to see more!

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I was expecting IB to be much more gorier that it was. After Natural Born Killers I felt as if I needed a shower to get the blood off. Kill Bills were more comic bookish so the blood and guts were less effective. All in all I liked IB.
