Something Non-Retro You Still Love?

I was just looking in the mirror yesterday, and I realized that even though my nose ring (tiny, tiny little blue jewel--very tasteful) isn't at all mid-century, I wouldn't dream of giving it up in the name of being more accurate, because I love it. The other things I couldn't live without are computers and the internet, obviously, and my new mountain bike, to name a few (though I love vintage and retro bikes, once I started riding a mountain bike, I knew I couldn't go back to my old cruser).

Is there something in your life that doesn't fit with your retro-ness, but you wouldn't want to give it up?

My ipod.

I'm aware that some don't like them, but I think they're a terrific invention that enable you to take music with you wherever you go.

Nose piercing wasn't unheard of. Just look at Ethel Granger.

I love my DVR!

I love the ability to rewind in case I missed something. I actually find myself wishing I could rewind other things in real life, like the radio in my car or conversations with people when I find myself drifting off and missing things.

Ever since I started working in the city (and not driving), I'd have to say that my biggest modern indulgence is my skateboard.

And she had her nose visibly pierced but she also had stretched ears and some of the ladies in the circles she was in had their septum pierced like I do. Those crazy commy tightlacers!

Re: Something Non-Retro You Still Love?

I love my septum piercing and my tattoos. I don't think I would feel whole without them. Somedays i feel like I would rather not have a cellphone, ipod or computer but it is close to impossible to live with those as a modern teenager. But my camera is something I need. The idea of camera isn't new of course but my DSLR is my money maker. haha (I shoot pinups)

Contemporary things I love-

1. Scrabble on Facebook (play with a friend 2,000 miles away)
2. My I-pod
3. Punk music
4. On a rainy day like today? Goretex boots.

Re: Something Non-Retro You Still Love?

The list of modern junk I couldn't do without is shrinking as I get older.

The i-Pod is very handy but only when I need to block out the cacophony that is produced by other modern crap (mobile phone shouters, other i-Pods, contrived 'street accents, babies high on crack). The quality of all media is getting worse as technology 'advances': worse pictures on TV, worse sound of recorded music, worse quality of 'photographic' images. People don't even seem to notice though.

I wouldn't wish away medical breakthroughs but even in these supposedly enlightened times it's only a tiny minority of the world population who see any benefit.

I suppose the PC is top of my list.

I think that Apple should make an ipod that looks like Dick Tracy's watch.

I second that - an idea whose time has come.... or is past due, like flying cars, jet packs, and robot maids.
