Your latest purchases

I never, ever, ever have any luck finding vintage women's clothes at thrift stores. Imagine my surprise when I stopped into a Goodwill on a lark & came out with these pretties:

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k223/susieseeburg/100_2185.jpg
The navy dress is made of that incredible pre-war rayon that feels like silk. Even the inside seams are pretty- they're bound with lace tape. The red blouse is sheer and has a ruffle down the front.

The light blue one is a playsuit with a split skirt. The purple dress is kind of an ugly color, but I love the details.

That's right, four vintage dresses & a vintage sheer blouse for under $20!

Re: Your latest purchases

I have been looking for vintage swimsuits for years, and finally found some. I stopped in my favorite thrift on Friday and came out with two in my size. The kind with the pointy cleavage and the wrap skirt- they're much more flattering than new suits. Now I just need someplace to wear them....

Re: Your latest purchases

Nice cravat, too!

Vintage women's suits are almost always cooler than modern ones - and the modesty panels are extra sexy!

Would that vintage men's suits were the same. MUCH harder to pull off.

Re: Your latest purchases

I haven't any pictures, it's all going in the wash, but yesterday I scored two pair of men's pajamas, 50s/60s vintage cotton. One pair long pants, one pair short. I love them! The long pair is white/navy stripes, the short pair is brown/white stripes.

Also found 3 great 50s handbags! Black, brown and navy. And I really needed some good, basic daily bags big enough for my wallet, etc.

Going back later today maybe!

Re: Your latest purchases

I can't show you, but I have been inspired to mimic the old Nancy Drew book covers, especially from the thirties and so I have been buying the best approximation I can to what is mostly dresses.

Re: Your latest purchases

I don't know if this is for the fellows or not, but I'll chip in. This just arrived via UPS today:

It's no Stetson Whippet, but being as the only one I've seen in my size is currently almost $120 on eBay, I'll take it. Looked good with the bowtie I bought about a year ago and that I'm only now mastering how to tie.

Re: Your latest purchases

Since I am very new to cold weather, and much of my clothing is still in storage in San Diego, I had to invest in a new coat. I took a chance and ordered online... I ordered from DaddyOs, this cute coat:

I really hope it works out, I have never had the best luck ordering online, but getting to places here is way too much of a process.

Re: Your latest purchases

That is a nice coat, and one I've been tempted by. I've ordered from Daddy-Os before and, as an international buyer, I've never had any trouble.

I purchased Baby's first party dress:

Pink with black flocking. I can't wait to see her in it!

Re: Your latest purchases

That's adorable! Where did you find it?

My sister makes baby clothes and made my daughter a bunch that are going to make her look like a tiny rockabilly babe. When she finally fits them.

Re: Your latest purchases

I got it at our local thrift store for under $5. I also got a huge bag of really cute clothes for her for about $20. smile

(Finding clothes for her is easy! I'm having a HARD time finding maternity pants that fit me. Petite length in leg/torso, only gaining weight in my belly. I don't think they exist!)

Re: Your latest purchases

Our latest purchase is a flat (barring any catastophes). It's part of an Edwardian house that was converted into 4 flats.
Stained glass front door, original wood staircase and bannister, open fire, comverted loft.
Now we just need to decorate and carpet the place, gut the kitchen and bathroom and all will be splendid!

Re: Your latest purchases

Oooooh, we want pictures! There's nothing we love more around here than to vicariously move into a "new" old house. wink

I finally found something that I've been looking for for quite a while. I bought myself a patio glider for Christmas. It's chair-size, though, not sofa-size, so it won't take up so much room. It works beautifully and is really comfy to sit in, just needs a new coat of paint. I'm thinking about painting it two-tone green. Maybe this spring I'll get some pix up!

Re: Your latest purchases

LS: Sounds like you are going to have a great time "retrofitting" your new flat. Do you already have the necessary furniture? Congrats and Enjoy!

Re: Your latest purchases

I'm not sure if I'd describe it as fun (the previous owner didn't seem to mind rainwater, patchwork carpets or filth) but we hope we'll end up with something good.
We've got bits and pieces of furniture; our prized posession being a 50s sofabed that we got for next to nothing and then spent a small fortune getting re-upholstered. We've got cabinets and units and bookshelves already but we are looking for a new bed and, eventually an entire kitchen. Solid wood, 20th century beds seem scarce so we'll probably go for an antique iron bedstead.

Re: Your latest purchases

It doesn't fall under the category of clothing, but I've been entranced with colored depression glass and have started purchasing pieces that I really love. A beautiful pink sugar bowl, a flaming red/orange footed compote bowl (Carnival or Marigold, I haven't quite untangled the nomenclature yet) and an iridescent gold Iris Goblet, the sort of thing you'd drink a root beer float out of. Oh they make me so happy when I get to use them! The one that got away was a beautiful, large footed blue satinglass compote dish with a lid. Oh, how it glowed in the light! You just wanted to run your hand over the satiny finish. It was only $20 but I stupidly said I'd think it over and come back the next day if I decided to get it. Guess what happened.

Surprisingly, I also found an ornate silver chafing dish with a pyrex lift-out at the Salvation Army. (The Salarmy, as I call it). It only cost $5 and it's in wonderful condition! Oh yes, and before I forget, a huge blue and white enamelware roasting dish with lid, big enough to roast a turkey. And I did. :-)

Re: Your latest purchases

On Sunday my husband and I went to a local consignment shop that carries some vintage. I found a navy wool skirt, embroidered in pink, yellow and pale blue, a green waist length jacket (probably early 1970s, but classic 30s style) with ribbing at the waist and cuffs, and a great 60s sweater with a round yoke, yellow, green, and white.
