Re: What's in your CD player/ Turntable/ Cassette Player??

I'm trying to come up with some CDs to burn for the baby we're expecting, so old jazz and blues:

Fats Waller - The Joint is Jumping (RCA Bluebird CD)
Raymond Scott
some swing collections
Carl Stalling
20s dance band music

...and the new Massive Attack record.

Re: What's in your CD player/ Turntable/ Cassette Player??

I've got Deke Dickerson in 3 Dimensions on my turntable (I just picked up an autographed copy when I saw him in Seattle).  I think my home CD player is empty right now.  Today, when I was driving guests of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival I got out some of my favorite CDs and ended up listening to Cab Calloway's Are You Hep to the Jive?, one CD each from my Count Basie Story and Lionel Hampton Story boxed sets, and a contemporary jazz CD that one of the artists riding with me just recorded.

Let me think... it's been so long since I could get to my car, I forget what's in the CD changer!

Kenton in Hi-Fi Stan Kenton
Risin' Outlaw Hank III
Gunfighter Ballads Marty Robbins
Cave Catt Sammy's newest (I forget the name)
Tamboo! Les Baxter
Swingin' the Century Bill Elliott

It's kind of a variety- I never know what I'll be in the mood for on the way to work!

Re: What's in your CD player/ Turntable/ Cassette Player??

Since the TV has a pretty decent sound system, the DVD tray has "The Lavender Hill Mob," "Woody Herman, 1937 Transcription Recordings," "The Best of Ella Mae Morse," "North by Northwest," and the first disc of "Benny Goodman--1937-38 Airchecks."

I really ought to put those things away.

Patty Duke "Everything But Love"  This is a guilty pleasure
"I'd Like to Get To Know You"  Spanky and Our Gang
"I Love You 1000 Times " The Platters
"Would I Lie to You?" Charles and Eddie
"Nothing But A Heartache" The Flirtations
"Secret Love"  Billy Stewart
These are all 45s or albums for the TURNTABLE.  And honestly the Cds don't sound nearly as good as the record player for these cuts.

Re: What's in your CD player/ Turntable/ Cassette Player??

The radio im my room has "Alien Fashion Show" in it, and i had to give up the other one in the living room to my mom, but it had
Johnny Favourite-"Holiday Romance"
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy-"Americana Deluxe"
Indigo Swing-"All Aboard"
The Mavericks-"What a Crying Shame"
Swing Mix '99
The Atomic Fireballs-"Tourch This Place"

and the pickup has the Andrews Sisters new cd, but i cant remember its name.  An intersting note is that the guitarist for the Mavericks produced the Johnny Favourite cd, and played guitar on the track "Home to Mama."

                     What's in my CD player(s)...
"Gaelic Voices" (compilation), "Patsy Cline's 12 Greatest Hits," U2 "Rattle and Hum," "Baseball's Greatest Hits" (another compilation), "Falling in Love with Frank Sinatra & Tommy Dorsey," Bryan Adams "So Far So Good."

I seem to have rather eclectic tastes. smile

What I'm listening to right now, though, is the Canucks v. Blue Jackets game on CKNW, via the internet. It's not on Centre Ice.  :x  4-0 Vancouver early in the second period... big_smile  lol  big_smile  lol

I'm glad to see that you are a fan of Spanky and Our Gang. A good friend of mine used to manage the group and I have met Spanky. She is a great lady that can still do a song justice. She was interviewed on a local station, KHUM in Ferndale, CA (home of "The Majestic"), and I learned a lot about her. Needless to say that I am a fan too!

Re: What's in your CD player/ Turntable/ Cassette Player??

Right now my cd player has:

Hot Club of Cowtown - Ghost Town
Django Reinhardt - Paris & London 1937 to 1948 (boxed set - don't remember what cd is in right now)
Joe Maphis - Fire On the Strings
Ray Price - The Essential Ray Price
Ronnie Self - Bop A Lena

And on ye ol' record player:

Les Paul & Mary Ford - Can't remember the exact name of the album, but it's all Hawaiian songs done with the Les Paul touch.

Great choices, ItGirl-  but who's Joe Maphis?
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000058T5X.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Joe Maphis was a guitar player who was famous for playing smoking, lightening-fast, finger-picking guitar instrumentals.  Image fiddle break-downs on the guitar.

If you've ever seen/heard Deke Dickerson play Rockin Gypsy, that's a Joe Maphis tune.  Joe is one of his main inspirations.

In fact, Deke's double-necked guitar was based on Joe's custom-made double neck that Semie Mosley specially made for Joe.  Mosley made 2 - one for Joe & one for Larry Collins.  (Mosley invented the Mosrite guitar).

Deke's guitar was made in the late 50s by Terry MacArthur, who was an apprentice to Mosley.  He was 17 years old when he made the guitar in his high school wood shop. Terry's a phenominal luthier who still makes guitars today.

Also, if you're familiar with The Collins Kids, Larry Collins was Joe's protege.  Larry & Joe appeared on a lot of those "Hayride" type shows in the 50s.

Joe Maphis was an exceptional guitar player, a real unsung hero of sorts.

Yes, indeed.  One of my favorite CDs is an obscure one called "Country Thunder" that features Joe Maphis and Merle Travis playing together in two sessions recorded in 1977 and 1981.  Both these guys are flyin' but manage to keep time with other.
