Scotch and Milk

I aplogize at the get go for this rather obscure stupid question but have any of you seen the film 'Scotch and Milk'?  It came out about five years ago or so, and its Adam Goldberg's directorial debut.  It is a fantastic movie shot in black and white and all the sets, cars, radios, clothes etc. have a keen 50's style to them.   It was never released, at least outside of festivals and the Sundance Channel I understand, because Goldburg could not afford to pay various record companies for the incredible period jazz songs sprinkled throughout the film.  Also it, I suppose, features a live performance by Jimmy Scott, I hope that says enough about the caliber of the tunes!!  Anyway if any of you have seen it I would very much like to hear your thoughts about it, thanks ahead of time!!

Re: Scotch and Milk

I'm wondering, well, taking for granted that nobody has seen this picture, that is too bad what a movie!!, if you've seen 'Fast Sofa'??  It also has a bit part via Goldberg, and is shot with a genuine retro element, I suppose I'm kind of caught up in a half decade ago California kickback, in reguard these movies and their retro style, but stuck out here in Boulder, and not having a whole lot of opportunity to kick it at the Skylark in Denver, I'm left seeking YOUR opinion reguarding things obscure.  I find it very hard to nose my way into an unfamiliar situation, a la a computer conversation,  or any in general, however if one of you out there somewhere would like to engage in my pick-up line or lines as the case may be, I would be more than happy to mail you a copy of Scotch and Milk, or Fast Sofa or both, let alone discuss them, I'm honestly just nervous that it may not be legal, after all it would be an I suppose infrigment on ownership, but I do not know, well maybe one of you out there could answer this stupid question, is sending someone a taped movie, interest founded through the internet, if there is any interest out there, against the law?  Please pally-boys and sweet friends let me know!!  And again thanks...

Re: Scotch and Milk

                     It's illegal...and highly appreciated.

Copyrighted material may be broadcast/distributed without charge under the "fair use" guidelines, which are very complex and would not apply.  Those are essentially what permits a radio station or DJ to play songs without having to pay for them, as long as they don't make a habit of exploiting a particular artist.

Personally, I am generally willing to make a mix CD for someone (which falls under fair use), but do not like making outright copies unless I know there is just no other way for them to obtain the album in question.  However, you should let your own conscience be your guide.

And don't be too shy here...this is (without question) the most civil discussion board on the 'net, and sooner or later you will find someone who shares your interests.

Re: Scotch and Milk

How about this 93?  My favorite color when I was a boy was the kind of blue the sky gets when she's relaxed, you know?  Deep, heavy, lightly intense or rather impelling?  Now that I'm on a bit my favorite color is a lush orange mixed with an embarresed blush red on the cheeks.  I am not sure how to get to know someone (um ones?) via a keyboard, I figure I might as well try to describe something close to me.  I really dig the way color plays a part in everything you do, weather its cooking breakfast or going to work, let alone the journey to get there.  Ok,  Here's a stupid question, all my talk about color, vision, can you come up with a word, or string of them, to describe what an orange smells like without using taste adjectives?  Try, well, sight ones, or better yet touch ones or ones you can hear?  An orange smells like....??  Wow I'm too shy for this kind of talk??
P.S. could you do me a heavy favour?  I think no matter where you live you could pick up a record, well CD by Jimmy Scott, and he's got a few out, but if you could throw down seven bucks or so on his DREAM, I would be very much (well I wish I could spell ablieged) interested on what you think of his manner, air, tone, well that's about how I can sum it up. Please 93, tell me what you think about those tunes.?

Re: Scotch and Milk

So, fifty, that was an awful lot of conversation from someone shy.  I don't really know where to begin.

To describe an orange...hmmmm, I don't think it would be as easy as the hot rock/cold rock scene in Mask.  Orange is a tricky color.  Not quite red, not quite yellow.  Let me think a little about that.

I will do my best to find the record you mentioned.  It may take some time, but I will try.  Feel free to write whenever/whatever, I am a good listener!   big_smile

Re: Scotch and Milk

After all that, I know I'm a little late, but, to clarify, a word on "fair use":

"Fair Use" is basically a term that means the copyrighted work is being used in such a way as to be educational. Under "fair use" guidelines, copyrighted works may be reproduced for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research.  It is often defined as the "privilege in others than the owner of a copyright to use the work in a reasonable manner without his consent."  The key here is the word "reasonable", which as any lawyer will tell you can be interpreted many ways!

It is greatly abused within academia to imply that "educational" or "non-profit" uses are "fair" and within copyright guidelines.  Often, it is not.  Copying of whole works of music, chapters of books, etc. do not usually fall under "fair use", even if they are not used for anything other than classroom teaching.  They would be cases of "excessive" copying; using the material in an "unreasonable" manner.  Record companies and publishers will often attempt to prosecute non-profit groups that go to extremes in photocopying or recording.  They see it this way: by using a photocopy or illegal recording, you are taking away a sale from them.  And the courts will often agree.

TMBC, I won't turn you in    , but copying an individual song onto a CD for anyone other than yourself (even including your wife!) is a violation of fair use.  Acceptable use is usually limited to copying a CD onto a tape to play in your car (for example), but that is only OK because you already own the work.   It does not matter whether you copy only one song or a whole album, the infringement exists because you are taking away a potential sale of that copyrighted work from the copyright holder.

Radio stations get around this because they usually have licensing agreements with the big record companies, and as we all know, airplay=sales.  But if you would tape a song off the radio, or a movie off TV, etc. you are violating the copyright of that work.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but this is something I have to deal with every day, so I thought I'd set y'all on the right path.  Now,  copy away!  8)

Re: Scotch and Milk

The colour orange is a warm thing, don't you think?  A mix of inferno and sitting on the edge, content.  Maybe a good way to describe it without using blatent taste discriptions is, well, if you've ever been anywhere that's cold in the winter, parking and getting out and plodding through the snow towards a big camp fire off somewhere ahead in a field, it's really cold, wind blowing, tempreture cutting through the layers, making you a bit vunerable to the world, and as you get closer the fire becomes a bit of a wavering, sifting compass, and as you get closer still you can hear it crackling and spitting and giggling, and still closer you can feel its heat, on the tip of your nose.  So go on a little more and its heat begins to seep in, to one spot then another and, at a magic spot, just one step more you can feel it all around you, like a blanket.  Now take one big step back, feel the cold and have a sip of the bourbon or hot chocolate you've wisely brought along, the flavor is not the thing, for you literate readers out there (well no pun intended you know what I mean?),  its the comfort of the flow down from your chin via your heart to your belly and branching off a bit.  That is the colour orange, staking out ground on the cusp of being too hot and  too comfortable, plus it looks wonderful, it has a spilling over plumpness, it exudes some vibe that decorates good head space, you know?  Orange, it seems to me, provides you with a rest but also underneath an enduring choice, do you run hot or settle in longer, for a spell?  What are your takes, or better, descriptions and also to keep this relevent, my VERY stupid question is this, I was recently travelling and it was by plane, so I took off my cuff links at the, you know check point, or whatever, and I lost one!!  My question then is two fold; do you think if I sent a letter or e-mail to the airport in question with maybe a picture or something they have a lost and found and would someone sort through the pocket knives and bobby pins and such?  And if not where on the internet is a keen spot to obtain another pair to relace them?  They are not worth a whole of bread but I kind of like em....

Hey FlatFifty, I was just down at the 'Lark on Thursday night.  Haldon Wafford is playing tonight, if you're interested.  Where in Boulder are you?  I'm right up Coal Creek Canyon, but I work in LoDo.
See ya 'round!

If any of you out there are interested, I'll be hitting the Skylark tommorow night, hope to see you, actually I hope it's still there.  And as for the stupid question, do you ever wonder if life kind of goes in cycles?  What I mean is you go along doing your thing and after a bit something remindes you of a far past notion, something maybe you used to do that was very cool, but has been blurred or rather obscured with time?  Anyway I've gotten that return of the cycle a bit, and feels very welcome in a  nostalgic.

Re: Scotch and Milk

The Skylark IS still there.  I was just warming a booth there on Thursday night.

I would caution you, however, on any travels to Town this weekend..

Mile High Mayhem 6 is this weekend, and the city is over-run with Mods & Rockers on Vespas.  There are quite a few fun events, however.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club is playing at the Bluebird (where Big Sandy was last night), Streets of London Pub is hosting an event/party.  Nallen's (on 15th and Market) will be hopping.

Most of the RAB crowd is sticking to the 'Lark, however.  I'm not sure who's playing there tonight.

Oh, BTW, Th'Ink Tank (the tattoo shop where I get my ink done) is hosting a kustom kar/street rod/hot rod show on Saturday, August 2, from Noon-8pm.  I have to work until 5pm, but if anyone would like to meet me and my pals at my shop (which is mere blocks from the show) around 5yikes0, we can all go from there.

If anyone wants to arrange a meeting, you can call me at work (Erico Motorsports) 303-308-1811.  Ask for Kym.  Hope to hear from you!

Re: Scotch and Milk

Looks like this post has been up a while, but just wanted to chime in about the original subject, which is the film Scotch & Milk.

Flatfifty,
I thought I was the only human who had actually seen this great flick.  It came on cable one night (IFC, maybe?) and I had the sense of mind to pop in a tape and record it.

Great dialog and cinematography, very stylish.  Los Angeles night life hipster subculture - like Swingers but darker, edgier.  Has a "Beat Generation" feel through the whole thing.  Features places like Micelli's and Charlie-O's.  The jazz filled soundtrack is phenomal.

I can't belive this film was never released on DVD.  What a shame.  If anyone ever gets the opportunity to see this film, do so.  You won't be disappointed.

Re: Scotch and Milk

Let's talk!!  Do you live in Los Angeles?  I've never been, but ever since I've seen that picture, man I wanna.  I was talking to a friend of mine earlier, pool side, several gin and tonics style about L.A. and we were talking about how awful it seems, you know through movies and papers and second hand tales and such, and he told me something that, even though I'm a bit naive and gullable I out right put faith in, he let spill that the reason L.A. has such a bad rap is that it is the best city in the world, and the rap is that way just to keep people out!  Well, now that I'm putting this down, it seems a bit far fetched, but in that low down fantastic flick the city does seems great.  It's just too bad, I figure, so many people are caught up in the movie angle there, I suppose.   Anyway it is very nice to know that someone else out there has seen, I'll just say, one of best movies made in the past fifteen years.

Re: Scotch and Milk

I've lived in Los Angeles for about 15 years.  Before that New Jersey and New York.  L.A. is a cool town and there are some hip joints  around.  You can have yourself a real good time if that's what you're looking for.  I've raised quite a bit of hell in my day and L.A. certainly gives you that opportunity.  All in good fun though.

It's a city, so it has it's share of crime and dangerous areas like any other city.  You just gotta be careful sometimes.  I love metropolitan areas.  Bright lights, concrete, tall buildings, seedy bars.  Can't get enough of it.

I may try Chicago for a bit as a change in scenery, though.  I've sort of had my fill of Los Angeles.  Need somethin new.
