Re: Who's Reading What?

There's a another vintage mystery series that I've read called the Maise Dobbs mysteries. It's a rather new series, so far there are only 2 books, but an entertaining read nonetheless. I would recommend that as well.

Re: Who's Reading What?

Hi all,

In addition to Rogue, I found a bunch of great titles today. Maybe you will be interested, maybe not, but here goes:
--------------------------

The Unknown Battle of Midway

Much has been written about the success of the
Battle of Midway, however, not much has been written about the 3 squadrons of torpedo bombers that were shot down just before the Dauntlesses arrived. This book examines the failures and successes of the torpedo bomber squadrons. Author actually was on one of the carriers during the battle. Pretty good so far.

One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer

Haven't started this one yet, but looks pretty good. Tale of becoming an officer, leading men in combat in the second Iraq war.

Roaring Thunder (fiction)

Written by that excellent author Walter Boyne, fiction book examining the postwar years and the advent of the jet age. Can't wait to start this one!

Oh well, sorry for all the military titles, but that's an area dear to my heart. Now back to Rogue!!!!!!!!

Re: Who's Reading What?

In addition to Rogue Male (which I've failed to get much reading done on lately, so I'm avoiding that post rather like you'd skip class when you hadn't done the reading), I'm reading Battle of the Torpedo Boats which is an older tract about... torpedo boats! These craft really reached their zenith during WWII and the battles involving the British, German and Italian boats in the channel and the Med are particularly fascinating. I also thank this book for helping me with my writer's block. Without it, Dangerous Dame wouldn't have Rummy McAllistar and his Liberty-engined CMB.

On hold from the library I have Hot Rod Pin-Ups by David Perry, The 1920s by Greg T. Farshtey and Model T Ford: The Car That Changed the World by Bruce W. McCalley (I haven't done any serious reading about T's since I was a little kid and I want to brush up on all the things I think I know).

Re: Who's Reading What?

Hi all,

Well in addition to I, The Jury, I went to the library today and came back with two fantabulous books:

James Stewart: Behind the Scenes of a Wonderful Life

and

Swing It! The Andrews Sisters Story

--------------------------------

I chose the James Stewart book first as he's always been one of my favority actors. So far, the book is going through each of his films, the professional actors he was acting with as well as some off-screen information. Louella Parsons would probably love the stuff this book is putting out. Evidently, if this book is correct, he was much more of a ladies man off screen than what I had been lead to believe, including forced visits to a something I shouldn't really be talking about here. I was somewhat shocked....nevertheless, a pretty good read so far.....

Lookin' forward to the Andrews Sisters stuff...maybe later in the week....

Re: Who's Reading What?

Mitchum and Steward bios sound like good reads. I'd like to check those out. Now if only I can remember...

Well, my Spillane book finally came - but it doesn't have I, the Jury! I'm very confused, but last night I stayed up reading One Lonely Night until 10:46. He's a great author, I must say.

I also got Hot Rods and Pin Ups by David Perry. I'm very impressed. Perry is a great photographer, the models are really quite good looking, the cars are (for the most part) pretty cool and the essays alone are a great read. I heartily recommend it. Now if I could just get the pinup of the blonde with the Model A coupe as a poster for my garage, I'd be in heaven.

I'm still waiting on my fonts book.

Just ordered Hot Rods and Pin-Ups! I've been coveting the David Perry prints on Allposter.com for ages and I never thought to see if David Perry had done a book. I think he also did the catalogue and manual for my bicycle.

Re: Who's Reading What?

I literally JUST started Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. I have no opinions on it whatsoever as I'm only about 3 pages into the book! tongue I'm probably one of the few people who didn't have to read it in high school. In fact, I knew little to nothing about the book until I saw the movie Capote, but witnessing some form of the process behind the writing of In Cold Blood (whether true or fictionalized) I decided I wanted to read the actual book.

In all honesty, I've been putting off starting the book since some of the images in Capote left me more than a bit haunted and I was leary of reading about such gruesome events prior to sleeping. What can I say? I have an all too vivid imagination that, sadly, sometimes won't let me rest.

I'll check in with you all once I get deeper into In Cold Blood - I just hope it's interesting enough and not like some of the other extremely dry non-fiction novels I've read in the past filled with page after page of meticulous details! I understand an authors' reasons for wanting to explain and paint a vivid picture of a certain place and time, but some writers tend to go overboard in their excessive descriptive passages.
Peace,
Pete

Re: Who's Reading What?

I'm back on the non-fiction as for some reason fiction just seems like too much hard work

Last week I finished Voodoo Science - The Road From Foolishness To Fraud by Robert Park. Thoroughy enjoyed it. It's an exploration of the misuses of science and examines such lunacy as perpetual motion machines, homeopathy, magnet therapy, cold fusion, star wars and more.

The quest to learn stuff I was too lazy to learn at school continues with Why Do Buses Come In Threes - The Hidden Mathematics Of Everyday Life by Rob Eastaway & Jeremy Wyndham. I was decidedly average at maths as a boy but if the examples given in this book were used I'd have learned a helluva lot more. The book transforms maths from what can seem like an abstract concept into a practical, problem solving tool that is easy to use.

Yes, I'm getting geekier as I get older but self-education is very satisfying indeed!

I finally managed to get hold of a copy of Horizons by Norman Bel Geddes. It's a fabulous book, quite prophetic in many ways, and a little naive in others.

I'm now on the lookout for a book about winding transformers.

Hey you want geeky, I'll do geeky, with knobs on!

Would it be possible to fill an entire book with information on winding transformers?? On second thought, I don't want to know.

Horizons looks really good if it's got the Bel Geddes stuff that I've seen in it. I've never heard of it before! The original costs an arm and a leg in the places I've looked and the '77 re-print aint exactly cheap.

Oh it's only a small book, 55 pages. More of a booklet really.

It's a useful skill to master, especially if you're interested in early audio equipment, i.e. valve amplifiers etc.

Horizons is an expensive book indeed. I got a '77 paperback reprint. It was the content I was after, rather than seeking out a collectible.

I'm not sure exactly what about it draws me in. Hmmm

What a shame the larger sized prints are so expensive! $50 and $80! Ouch. The 5x7 is quite affordable though!

Now to keep this on topic, I decided to put In Cold Blood away for now (anyone want to take bets whether or not I'll ever pick it up again?) and I just started reading Sessions with Sinatra: Frank Sinatra and the Art of Recording. The book chronicles Sinatra's talent as it was captured and preserved on record, within the context of his rise to fame and three or four distinct periods in his lengthy career. So far it's a great read, if a bit technical when, for example, it describes the way a late 1930s big band was miked in the studio. Still, I'm enjoying the book and look forward to diving deeper into it.
Peace,
Pete

Anne Sexton, a bio
By Myself, and Then Some; Lauren Bacall
The Maltese Falcon
several Agatha Christies
several magazines.

I try to read a book a day, but some days I have to wash dishes and do laundry.

Re: Who's Reading What?

Settling Accounts: Return Engagement by Harry Turtledove. An alternate history about World War Two. The point of divergence is the notorious "lost order" incident at the Battle of Antietam in the American Civil War. Return Engagement is about the sixth book in a series beginning in 1881 and not yet finished. I anticipate Turtledove writing through the hundredth anniversery of Antietam in the early sixties.

For real.

Tonight, we're staying in and relaxing, so I've started Savage Beauty, a bio of Edna St. Vincent Millay.
I tend to be lukewarm about her poetry, but her life story is a great read.

Re: Who's Reading What?

The Glamour by Christopher Priest.

It's ok, I like the concept but it was a slow starter. Get the feeling he's borrowed an idea from Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and grounded it more in reality. Nothing wrong with that, but it lacks something. I've not finished it yet though so I'll reserve judgement until then.

"Zotz!" a somewhat Thorne Smith-ish Walter Karig comic novel from the mid '40s about an unassuming professor of ancient languages who stumbles across the power of life and death, and who can't penetrate the Washington D.C. bureaucracy to make use of it as a war weapon. Lightweight, but not bad.

I've been shuffling through The Route 66 Cookbook before going to bed. I usually end up waking with a book in my lap around 2 o'clock am, without much reading beforehand! Naturally I had to skip to the Oklahoma section. A quite interesting read about the now defunct restaurants on Route 66, with some of their original recipes too. There's one restaurant that's still open to this day, and if it's not too far, I'm gonna try and find it tomorrow. Can't wait for this road trip...should be fun!
