Let's Make a Retro Vow!

With the fall upon us, the summer's heat is gone. I think we should all take a vow this Fall to actively dress in retro gear at least once per week. I know some members practically live in the past (ZSC wink- I love ya pally), bet the rest of us need to spread some retro love. So what are you wearing today, ladies and gents to spread the love?

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

I spent all last weekend in vintage dresses to celebrate the Rockabilly Ball here in Seattle.  Today, no real vintage clothes.  Only reproductions.

My daily fall/winter wardrobe for work includes mainly vintage cardigans and wool pencil skirts.  I also have several pairs of vintage-inspired trousers, too.

Olive green double-breasted suit, '30s tartan necktie, '30s Van Heusen detachable collar, '30s collar pin, green '40s striped socks, oxblood wingtips, Paris double-grip garters, 1926 Illinois Rockliffe wristwatch, linen pocket handkerchief (four points showing) and 1942 Stetson Playboy fedora with mode edge and 1-inch ribbon.

I love e-bay. Couldn't dress without it!

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

Heat's not quite gone here yet, but I picked up a pair of blue slacks, finally.  Need to get a pair of black shoes and a white turtleneck, then I can put that together with the navy peacoat I picked up...not quite full-on retro, but certainly not everyday wear for the moden crowd.

I've got too small of a vintage civilian collection to go retro all the time.  I've got pick up more ties, shoes, and suspenders.  I'm on spending freeze right now.

And ZSC...you're making me jealous.

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

I'll take up the once a week challenge.  I mainly work from home, so it tends to be work clothes for painting, etc.  However, I'm really trying to at least dress retro, if not all "vintage," when I go out.

I'm a mix of vintage and retro today as usual.  Black wool twinset, pink tweed pencil skirt, pink and white polkadot scarf, nude fully-fashioned stockings, and black peep-toe shoes.  I'm already way past the one day a week retro stage. big_smile

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

So--laying out duds for tomorrow. Lessee--starting with necktie, a '30s bright red block print foulard; '40s gray lisle socks with red clocks (these from WWII weekend; I hate to subject anything to the ugliness of my own pedal extremities, but otherwise, the socks would go to waste); '30s Arrow Mitoga collarless shirt; Larter collar studs (nice to find a matched pair once in a while); '30s Van Heusen Van Kissel long-point collar; '20s Tiffany collar pin (maybe not--I'll decide after I have the tie knotted and look down to see which shoes I put on); '20s rectangular engine-turned double-sided cufflinks; black perforated cap-toe shoes (wingtips, if I wear the collar pin, or vice versa--there's an explanation); gray striped garters; black-faced 1936 Waltham Riverside watch; white linen pocket handkerchief; gray early '30s Mallory upturned roll-brim hat with square bow in back; 1933 Sheaffer Balance mottled green fountain pen; battered, worn-out wallet with pathetically little cash, and bills folded with the small denominations on the outside.  "A man's wallet can betray a certain lack of ready cash, but his clothes shouldn't," as stated an Esquire caption to an L. Fellows fashion drawing in 1934 (if only I had the gorgeous brown peaked-lapel three-button suit with the slightly extended shoulders, double-breasted shawl-lapel vest, and deep-pleated medium-drape trousers shown therein. Anyone want to join me in tracking down a few really good patterns, and going into the '30s-men's clothing repro business??)

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

What a great idea.  I have to admit that my retro dressing has slipped lately.  I used to dress 50's every day, but I have lost a lot of weight so half my stuff doesn't fit anymore.   It's hard to find vintage clothes in a medium size, everything seems to be an extreme of really big or really small.
Also, I work in a boutique, so I get tempted by modern clothes at a discount.   But the colder weather definitely brings out my urge for cardigans and wool, etc.  My birthday's coming up, so maybe I can charm some new vintage things out of my guy!  I've really been working on his clothes too, and he got his first insult the other day at work.  A co-worker told him that "the 50's called and they want their clothes back!"  Ah,  the price of being well dressed and groomed these days!

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

Ah, the wisecrack from the all-black clad moderniste. Somewhere, we have a thread on dealing with such yabboes. One tack: feign ignorance of the joke. "The 50s called? What do you mean? I don't get it." This puts the person who made the remark on the defensive every time, since they want to score a point, not be exposed as having just delivered a lame insult. ("Forget it" is the likely response.) Another is to just to have some pat answers on tap:

Q: "Where did you get that hat?"
A: "The warden gave it to me when I got pardoned for capping some smartass."

Q: "Don't you know it's the 21st Century."
A: (While pointedly breaking eye contact to examine the other person from head to toe) "No, I couldn't tell."

Q: Any general crack about the retro clothes.
A: Focus on the ugliest thing the other person has on, and ask questions with the best mock sincerity you can muster.

This reminded me of the novel Time and Again, when the Victorian woman comes to the present day for a short time and is horrified because she's convinced everyone is walking around in their underwear!

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

Oooh fun! Today I am wearing a late 40's navy blue wiggle dress with black pinstripes (it's my favorite dress I'll have to post a pic. of it), black gloves, black 40's pumps, and a black clutch purse. I set my hair in hot curlers so I'm looking very Lana Turner. I've got Russian Red painted lips and sinful red nails.

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

                     ...and not-so-grown men!

I'm reminded of the most common question regarding my car: "What are the antennas for?"

The car has 5 antennas.  And a spotlight, pushbars, a police radio, a CB, a fuzzy dash, and if those weren't enough, a gumball light.  Wokkachikkabowow.

My response is usually along the lines of "For the radios."  Depends on my mood, of course.  I hate having to tell them outright it's an old cop car...should be readily aparrent.

Clothing, on the other hand, I get compliments more than insults, even from my contemporaries, which I'm usually surprised at....this is the jeans and a t-shirt with the occasional backward ballcap crowd.  Most common exclamation is, "Wow, check out those shoes!"  I love my specs.   Got 3 pair of pants off at the alterations shop right now, just got another shirt, some white shoes, and 4 vintage ties on the way for screamin' cheap, hopefully(eBay...).  Just need some suspenders and a few more pair of shoes, and I should have enough for a whole work week.

I just might be able to live up to the challenge, and then some!

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

                     Ohh everyone sounds so glamorous!

I was told yesterday that I had a British Audrey Hepburn look about me and then later on in the day another girl enthused that I looked just like a Barbie doll- now I was hoping she meant the original 50s Barbies.... Anyhow that was a nice day for complements.

I generally wear a retro style, but not often vintage for the reason I can't always find things I like, so thats why I'm sewing like mad at the moment- but has anyone else noticed the dissappearance of Bettericks Retro patterns? I wanted to make their 40s coat this Winter but it has dissappeared!  8O

Well I'm not wearing anything dead special today- black pencil skirt and a purple striped cardigan buttoned up over a little black tshirt for warmth. However, the devil is in the details- as I am all matched up with little earings with purple details and a black ribbon tying up my ponytail, my black kitten heel shoes and my black and cream doctors handbag- oh and nude stockings- no bare legs for me- brrrrrr! Oh I do like matching accessories.

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

Ah, the devil is in the details, but so are the angels. Today it's a brown Harris tweed jacket, medium-green cavalry twill tousers with deep inward-facing pleats, dull-finish oxblood cap-toes, mint-green sleeveless sweater (tucked into the trousers), white shirt, bit-link collar pin, another '30s tartan necktie, jade cufflinks, and a camel-color rough finish Stetson Select from the early '50s.

As for patterns, they sem plentiful enough on e-bay, but you have to use some odd search terms to find them. I did track down a pair of necktie patterns from the '40s, and when I have the inclination will prably send these off to Kayre Morrison to be made into tie-and-handkerchief sets. (Any of you fellas interested??) She's Dean Mora's vocalist www.morasmodern.com, and has a side business making retro dresses, www.dancingdaughters.com. She does an excellent job on these!

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

Ohh look at those dresses- so cute!

I know if I look far and wide I can find patterns- I got this great pattern for 4 different 40s blouses and for once it was my size- great I thought- no need for adjusting patterns!! How wrong was I!!- four alterations later it still isn't finished and now its no longer the weather to wear it as it is a lightweight summer blouse! Its being put to one side as I work on my Halloween costume, adjust one of my evening dresses and think about making a two peice beach dress and all by the end of the month *sigh* However, a gal must soldier on and claim all hours of the day as hers!

You're sounding very dapper today Mr Zootsuitcoot- can I sit on your desk and take a letter?

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

                     Miss Roulette,
I get the Barbie doll "compliment" as well! It must be that we love to paint ourselves up from head-to-toe. The name that has permanently been given to me is "The Doll" everyone in school called(s) me it and they didn't bother to know my real name. lol I think the most generic names that I've been called are Lucy, Betty Boop, Marilyn Monroe, and Rosie the Riveter. Everyone sounds so stylish! We should have a frock thread for pictures. big_smile Gee ZSC, how many vintage items do you have!? You sound so debonaire.

Re: Let's Make a Retro Vow!

Actually, the vintage stuff is almost all jewelry and accessories. The suits, jackets, trousers, and shoes are all new. That's the good thing about being a guy into retro: You can pull off the look with just the accessories!

And now for that letter ladies (Comfortable? Good);

"Messrs. Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger, Hungerdunger and McCormick: Re yours of the 5th inst. at hand and contents noted. Has come to our attention that an opportunity re: disposal of your consignment of Egyptian Onyx hush-flush Deluxe fixtures has arisen in U.K. All similar fixtures mysteriously vanished from men's facilities of Metropolitan Police, and Scotland Yard informs that they have nothing to go on. Must act fast. Tea times threatened. Contact Lord Catsmeat Potter Pirbright, O.B.E., Blandings, Shropshire."

You may go shoe shopping now ladies. Take what you need from petty cash.

You know Susie QT, Zootsuitcoot is a great boss. He lets me take 2 hour lunch breaks, gives me spending money for my shoes, doesn't mind me filing my nails at the desk, doesn't mind that I can't make coffee...

I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that I sit on his knee everynow and then, although you never can tell with these gents......
