Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Let's see...White Christmas, Holiday Inn, It Happened On Fifth Avenue, Rough Magic.

I would like to see Amelia, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and a surprising number of other films. One thing about a lousy economy; the movies that are made are worth watching. Talk about your silver linings!

I was expecting IB to be much more gorier that it was. After Natural Born Killers I felt as if I needed a shower to get the blood off. Kill Bills were more comic bookish so the blood and guts were less effective. All in all I liked IB.
I agree. I wanted it to be a relentless and glorious shower of blood that we could really revel in with a satisfyingly spotless conscience. The violent scenes were, indeed, graphic but I wanted a lot more.

Welcome to the forum, Retromama! Swing Kids is one of those movies that I remember fondly as being the flick (or one of them) that started me on my path to retro-love. I hope you enjoy your time here. Don't forget to tell us about yourself in the "newbie" thread!

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I have about a 45 minute each way subway commute so I have some free time to watch classic movies on my iphone.

This week I've just finished "SKY PATROL" from 1939: "Tailspin Tommy" Tompkins and "Skeeter" Milligan are training young U. S. Army fliers for the newly-formed 'Sky Patrol,'a branch of the Army Reserves which operates along the borders and coast-lines, on the lookout for smugglers.

Currently I'm watching Bettie Davis and Pat O'Brien in "HELL HOUSE" from 1932: A young boy is sent to reform school after he refuses to implicate his friend.

Swing Kids has a great soundtrack. It's kind of interesting to note that the James Horner Orchestra also did the Titanic soundtrack. Who knew that Horner could swing so well.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie the other day. It was okay. Downey seems to play the same characters over and over again. Abuse problems, love lost etc. Jude Law again is under used. Rachel McAdams is lovely, but seems out of place. And never once did Sherlock utter the words "Elementary Dear Watson."

Quite right too as he never said it in the books either (so I'm led to believe).
We went to see it and enjoyed it for what it is; quite a silly film with far too much CGI. I quite like Robert Downey Jnr's character in the last 3 films I've seen him in (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man) but I agree, they don't differ an awful lot.
Mark Strong was OK but I do wish they'd stop making him wear a wig. The character would have been just as good bald.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Two Weeks to Live, which was what you'd expect from a B movie Lum and Abner - entertaining, and basically a radio show on film.

How was Shutter Island?  Anyone see the Wolfman?  I've read the reviews, and Will the Thrill's on this esteemed site, but I am interested in any other views.  AH, I'll prolly see it anyway.

I am also looking forward to the Pacific, starting this month on HBO.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Cats Don't Dance is an oft-forgotten animated gem from 1997. It is set in a world where talking, dancing animals exist in a world with humans, though the animals enjoy a bit of a second class existence. The movie is one of the best attempts at recreating the Golden Age of Hollywood stand-by of "bright eyed youngster makes it big in Hollywood". In fact the movie is set in 1939 and features some wonderful "appearances" by Hollywood greats such as Mae West and Clark Gable.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23/swank76/south%20side%20style/194625_1240363393911_400_300.jpg

Talented Danny (voiced by Scott Bakula) arrives in Hollywood from Kokomo, Indiana. Expecting to make it to stardom in a week, he has his dreams of stardom ruined by a delightfully evil caricature of Shirley Temple, Darla Dimple. The plot is hardly original, with the villains getting their comeuppance after a whirlwind of musical numbers and the help of scrappy friends.

I was glad to see that the music (artfully done by Randy Newman) pays homage to the larger-than-life feel of the glory days of Hollywood and helps move the story along at a break-neck pace. Furthermore, the animation style is a spot-on Tex Avery clone (in the best way possible). My favorite touch is the use of screen legend Gene Kelly to choreograph the dance sequences. If there is a complaint, it is that the movie is only available in a rather boring pan-and-scan DVD that doesn't this forgotten gem much justice. Like any great animated movie, this has great potential for both adults and kids. Who has seen it? Who remembers it?

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

Shutter Island is a little over indulgent film making I think, but it does have a twist.

It was good. I liked the book a lot, written by the author of "Mystic River" and "Gone Baby Gone" and had braced myself for the brutally convoluted plot twists.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I just finished watching the 1956 film "Please Murder Me" starring Angela Lansbury and Raymond Burr. Pretty good film noir. Could make an interesting remake.

"A lawyer wins an a acquittal for his client, a woman accused of murder. After the verdict, he finds out that she indeed did commit the murder and manipulated him to win her acquittal. Guilt-ridden, and knowing that she can't be tried again for the murder, he devises a plan to bring her to justice."

I'm rewatching "Lonely Hearts" and awaiting the arrival of "The Honeymoon Killers". The former is a bit of a forgotten gem that I'll be reviewing.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I just watched a bunch of 'Lum and Abner' films. They were fairly entertaining. Chester Lauck (who played Columbus "Lum" Edwards) and Norris Goff (Abner Peabody), were pretty convincing as old men. Was surprised to learn that they were in their late 30s when they made the original films.

Re: What Movie Did You Just Watch?

I just watched the 1937 Joe E. Brown flick "Fit for a King" via iTunes. Funny flick. For years I only knew Brown from his characters in the Warner Bros. Bugs Bunny spoofs. Fun flick: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028876/

You can watch it right here as a matter of fact: http://www.archive.org/details/fitforaking
