*~60's dance styles~* Did anyone ever dance the monkey, the mashed potatoe, the swim, the funky chicken, or the twist? I love these styles of dance! They were so fun! Most were demonstrated on Dick Clarke's 'American Band Stand' like never before. |

Re: *~60's dance styles~*BTW as far as I know they are the only people in NYC teaching these old dances...god love them for keeping it alive. Who knew in a town like NYC you cannot find a place that teaches these old great dances! GOD BLESS the Pontani Sisters! |

Re: *~60's dance styles~*
Living in South Philly, I ran into "Bandstand" alumni quite a bit. Just as a note of triva, the old" Bandstand" studio was located at 3rd and Washington and the building now contains the Mummers' Museum. I still can't dance. I don't even know how to shag, which, considering that I grew up on the Gulf Coast, is pretty sad. |

No, Bandstand was recorded at "Studio B" in the old WFIL-TV building at 46th and Market Streets in West Philly. Here's a link: http://uchs.net/HistoricDistricts/wfil.html |

Re: *~60's dance styles~*
Right. I know it was at 46th and market for at least some period of time because we know a couple of "Bandstand" alumni and they talk about walking from school at West Catholic straight to the studio so that would make sense. But it was also at 3rd and Washington because there's a marker outside of the building. I walk past it all the time but have never really paid attention to it. Next time I'm there, I'll take a look and tell you what it says. Anyway, it was at both locations at one time or another but because Pennsport in South Philly was my neighborhood, that's the one I always think of. |

Re: *~60's dance styles~*
You can learn a lot from Hairspray but unfortunately sometimes the feet are cut off. A lot of the dances originated in Chicago and some of the originals show up at dusties steppers sets in Chicago. I remember them doing the Roach where they act like they're stamping out roaches. I'm sure a lot of really bad movies have them in them too. |
