Men who dance

at least in america, i think it has something to do with the culture. boys are absorb the idea that dancing is for sissies and football is a man's game.

guys are afraid to move their hips, move their feet, unless its to avoid a tackle, and afraid to look stupid.

there was also an article about how, psychologically, men are more worried about looking really bad when they dance. They'll only go out if they are in the top third. The bottom third then decides they completely suck so they disappear, then of the remaining 2/3, the bottom 1/3 decides they suck and they leave, etc. etc..

funny thing though, sometimes dances around dc have just have too many guys...so i learned to follow

Eh, there aren't *nearly* enough leads in the Detroit area, so I learned to lead...thank God! Now I get to dance quite a bit more—but not enough.

How about you send some of your extra leads our way?

Re: Men who dance

More men should dance. Men who can dance are automatically very sexy. Anyway, they've got no excuse, because I'm a woman, and I still feel like a great big leggetty lump on the dance floor.

Re: Men who dance

Man I'd love to go to a place where all you girls where dancing, would help me get out there more. I love to dance but yea I have that 'amature on the floor' fear. I don't mind taking the classes before dance nights, its kind of fun no presure settings. I want to take weekly classes but most of the ones I check out have couples signing up, no single girls. And I have no steady girl or even a female friend to convince to go with me. But I'm learning and I am going to take a class cause I know I love to dance and I know its a fact girls love guys that dance.

You THINK you know, but you can't fully appreciate just how much we (well, I'm speaking for myself here) LOVE men who can dance. You don't even have to be able to dance. Just able to look like you're trying, and having fun, and LOOK LIKE you don't care if people think you're a 'great leggetty lump' (my new descriptive phrase. I think it sums up how not-very-good dancers feel when surrounded by people doing all sorts of frightening things on several axes(that was meant to be plural of axis, is that right?).).

Re: Men who dance

It is to bad that more men do not learn to dance. I think it is a combination of culture and the dance. Culturally less men start dancing when they are young so it is harder to learn when they get older. Second, swing has the man as the lead so when dancing their partner adjusts to there skill level...making dancing the same with every girl until they get better.

I think the additional work can scare or disinterest men over time (even if the girls are pretty and they like the movement). The men that you do see have either been dancing a while or are really determined! Maybe we can start recruiting???

I have no idea...we would have to get more input from the guys on why they do not learn or stay in Swing?? Find out what would keep them involved in Swing??

Does anyone have any ideas??

Re: Men who dance

i've been doin this a long time, for fellas and ladies. the fellas need a lot of encouragement, but they stick with it as long as they don't loes their cool. once a fella feels like what he's doin isn't cool, it's over. no matter how many pretty ladies there are. i try to keep things fun, make jokes, and make everyone feel good. dancing isn't supposed to be hard.

Re: Men who dance

I love to dance, but I rarely get the opportunity. I am a single mom, and a night out on the town is a rare occurance. And if I do get out, finding a man who is a good dancer can be a challenge. There are always the line of guys who think they are good dancers...*sigh* Finding the real deal is a different story.

I tried to teach my ex husband to dance, but he was too clumbsy. Really. We had a lot of fun goofy-dancing...but I couldn't take him out in public.

Re: Men who dance

As for me, although I haven't done much swing dancing, I never had a choice about learning to dance. I think how you're raised has a great deal to do with a guy's attitude about dancing. My family, as a group (parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents) would all go out dancing at the local dance hall on weekends. When I became old enough to go along (I think I was 13) my grandmother just grabbed me and took me out on the floor and made me learn to waltz.

As dancing was a common activity in my family, its no big deal for me to dance. Other guys I know, however, whose family didn't go dancing often, are much more hung up about getting out there on the floor.

Re: Men who dance

A good way to recruit is for those of us who are pretty good (impressive to those who don't know how) is to offer affordable private lessons. My boyfriend and I do that and the men love it. They feel much more comfortable that way and they get good personal instruction. Also find men who do other types of danicng, some guys in my Ballet class are really excited about learning swing because it is a much more masculine dance.

I didn't have a dancing family growing up, but my kids are doomed.

Re: Men who dance

guys definately need a lot of encouragement. A lot of beginning guys want a nice dark corner to dance in so they don't have to embarass themselves.

Re: Men who dance

Two-Tone... of the Jones Persuassion here,

How to get guys to dance, its a tough one I agree I speak from first hand knowledge. I absolutely fell in love with swing a few months ago when I ttok my first ballroom dance class here @ chico state in Cali. I had a little bit of natural rythum whcih I think helpped. But when I would see a really good couple dance I would feel like a total moron. My first dancing theory was to get really good and then once I was I would allow my self to have fun with it. And it took me forever to realize that was really lame. SO now I just have fun with it and hopefully Ill get good or at least decent along the way. But here is a list of what helpped me get over my IM A HUGE DANCING WUSS PHASE:

-first of all if your a teacher or a really good dancer be nice and seek out us beginners. You know you can tell who we are. We're the ones who dance once or twice with our close friends who made us go to the dance and then just decorate the walls for the rest of the night. At the places I dance i would watch a really good couple dance and if they would see me wacthing they would come over and talk to me ask me what I knew and if I wanted to practice.

-i found a few really low key places where there was dancing every week where hardly anyone showed up sometimes but it was good because it was very workshopish. When a newbie sees that the really good dancers actually practice and mess us it makes then feel not so lame. THe whole man behind the curtain in the wizard of oz thing.

-another one that may be really lame but works is that if a beautiful girls asks you to dance even if you have no idea what your doing you just can't say no.

so anyway Im going to a swanky ballroom dance on wedsday so I bought a new shirt and suspenders today ahhhhhhhhh ye-ah. Smooth operator baby! *grin*

peace out kids
