Just curious to what everyone's favorite swing dance style(balboa, east coast, west coast, etc.) Mine is the charleston and jitterbug.

Re: Favorite Dance?

I'm not a fan of the Shim Sham, but only because I don't care for memorizing patterns.  To me, dance is about reaction and interpretation to music, not just synchrony and memorization.

That said, I agree with strangekat.

And I love to pogo.

Re: Favorite Dance?

Savoy Lindy for me...Bal for those *real* quickies.  Love the Sham, and swing rueda is a blast.
Sfdoll...I just spent some time with Erik and Sylvia who pretty much single-handedly brought the Hollywood style "back".  I believe that it is much more common to see Hollywood out in Cali...facts being what they are and all!  It was amazing to see them do their thing!  Savoy is more common out here in the NE, again, location origins affecting popularity.  Balboa is making a steady comeback here too.  I hardly see anyone doing ECS anymore, which is fine as everything ebbs and flows in popularity.  WCS is still very much in vogue too.

Re: Favorite Dance?

Hi 'stan,  I've never met Erik and Sylvia, but have always admired their dancing, they're wonderful!  I was taught Hollywood style by two direct students of Erik and Sylvia- and these guys are amazing together!
TMBC:
Aaw, but the shim sham can be soo fun when done in a group, after a night of great, exhaustive dancing!  Something like the last hurrah for the evening.

Re: Favorite Dance?

I love Hollywood lindy and the shag (the only dance I picked up with complete ease--and what a workout, too!)

I'm with TMBC--I am not much of a line dancer, so I usually hightail it when the Shim Sham comes on (but hubby loves it and always gamely attempts it!)

Re: Favorite Dance?

I love just basic jitterbug. When I first started dancing,it was just side, side, rockstep.A little twirl, throw in a cute dip and then grab a drink, gab, and show off your duds.
I know how to lindyhop, but I haven't found my comfort zone with it and there isn't anyone to teach Hollywood style here.

Re: Favorite Dance?

I like the Hollywood/smooth style Lindy, although I'm not terribly good at it.

I think my styling is somewhere between savoy and Hollywood, as it's quite rare to social dance with a smooth-styler in London- most folk either dance savoy style or some form of jive/rock and roll/ east coast style.

Shag always raises a snigger, as it's a slang word for sex in the UK!

Every now and then at the Ashkenaz in Berkeley or at the Dog House on Mission- a good shim shamming will take place towards the end of the night.  It really just depends on somebody initiating it!

Re: Favorite Dance?

blah, i get confusededed by the shim sham, that said i can still do it (after a fashion)!

i prefer the balboa and bal-swing, purely because that's the one i learnt the most of, but i also love lindy hoppin and the jitterbug stroll.

and like TMBC i pogo.

oh and i skank to the infectious nature of syncopated ska.

oh and irish dancing works up a hell of a sweat, that's good excercise (although always do it on a sprung floor, i had to do lessons on a concrete floor once, and i had shin-splints for roughly 3 weeks. owey  )

but still- dancing in general est trés fantastique! big_smile

That's why I don't generally like to dance to outdoor concerts.  It's a romantic vision but the reality of what it does to my knees dissuades me.

Re: Favorite Dance?

My solution to a hard floor is to do the "Frankie Manning" version of lindy...not circa 1940, the old-man version where your feet never leave the ground!

Re: Favorite Dance?

                     one word.  Balboa!

I learned bal at the same time as I was learning lindy.  I injured my back about the same time, and for a year the only dance that I could do was bal, so I put all my effort into that dance.  It was kinda funny after awhile, someone new would ask me to bal, and we'd have a lovely dance.  Later they'd ask me to lindy, and I'm sure from the look on their face, they wondered if I was the same person they bal'd with earlier.

I like the Shim Sham, but prefer to do a variation that's different then what the masses dance.  I like either the Dean Collins Shim Sham or Al & Leon's Shim Sham that I'm working on now.
