Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

This movie was recommended to me by a friend for Grace Kelly's anti-glamour tour de force performance but after reading a synopsis on Amazon.com, I'm not sure if I should rent it (at Blockbuster for a wallet robbing $4 or $5) or just shell out the extra $10 to buy it and add it to my ever growing classic movie DVD collection. I'm a big Bing fan and LOVE Grace Kelly in many of her movies (especially Hitchcock's Rear Window my favorite of all his masterpieces!) but I'm not sure I could get into the plot. I rather like Grace as the glamour doll that she is and adore Bing's rich voice.

What about High Society? I've never seen it but would definitely buy it solely for its star wattage! (I'm also planning on buying The Philadelphia Story 2-Disc Special Edition when it comes out in a few weeks.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated...
Peace,
Pete - who still needs to watch North By Northwest, The Manchurian Candidate (Original Frank Sinatra version), Citizen Kane, Roman Holiday, From Here to Eternity, and Vertigo! Ha! I guess I just need more time...but I'm always up for expanding my DVD collection regardless if I have or don't have time to watch them!  big_smile

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

Wow, you've got some great viewing ahead of you.  North by Northwest and Vertigo are both excellent, and Roman Holiday is one of the most charming movies I've ever watched.

We'll have to keep an eye out for the 2-disc Philadelphia Story...right now we have the single-disc "Special Edition" in our store, but the new one sounds like a pip!

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

Well, I've not seen the Country Girl, but I did see Manchurian Candidate over Christmas. It's a very good film, it didn't start until late and I was very tired but I just couldn't leave the sofa... very gripping!

Ahem.... did I mention I'm going through a Laurence Harvey phase at the minute......

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

The Country Girl is good... in a depressing, just-barely-expanded-from-the-original-stage-play kind of way. Both Kelly and Crosby give excellent, de-glammed, dead-serious performances, so it's an unusual picture. Definitely recommended, but keep in mind that it's quite grim viewing...

Put me down as one of the people who just doesn't like High Society. I'll take The Philadelphia Story anytime, but this musical remake has always seemed a bloated fifties drag to me, with some klutzy performances and a real lack of drama and zing. The Cole Porter songs are very good, of course, and on paper it's hard to argue with the stellar cast, but I've always found it kind of D.O.A... (But that's just my opinion: you should judge for yourself.)

If you watch High Society before the Philadelphia Story you might like it.

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

That may be true, but I saw The Philadelphia Story when I was still a kid, so it's hard for me to imagine.  Besides, growing up when I did, I considered Sinatra, Crosby, and even Armstrong a bunch of antique alchoholic hacks - it took me decades to finally peel that concept back, find my way to their earlier great material, and discover their astounding greatness...

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

I really didn't like High Society, I ended up switching channels after about 30 minutes. Star power doesn't always make a film. I wouldn't pay to rent it. It's bound to show up on TCM or even a PBS station.

Manchurian Candidate is another film I didn't like. I really don't like Sinatra as an actor at all and can barley tolerate him as a singer, so I'm sure that played a part.

Citizen Kane is a wonderful film, Wells really should of quit after this one. It's on TCM pretty often.

I slept through From Here to Eternity, Roman Holiday and The Country Girl. I'm not sure why, but all of them put me too sleep.

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?

Well, based on everyone's advice, I decided to wait on both The Country Girl and High Society and stick to the movies I already have but have yet to watch.
I'll save my introduction to The Philadelphia Story plot when I actually buy the 2 disc Philadelphia story DVD, and I'll see if I can get someone to rent The Country Girl with/for me!

I'm actually heading to Best Buy to purchase Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House on DVD tomorrow!

Peace,

DV ~ If you don't mind watching a commercial or two...you'll find the trailers for quite a few old movies here http://www.videodetective.com/movies/.  They've had many of the titles I've searched for...and give you a bit more to go on than a plot summary.
