Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"? This movie was recommended to me by a friend for Grace Kelly's anti-glamour tour de force performance but after reading a synopsis on Amazon.com, I'm not sure if I should rent it (at Blockbuster for a wallet robbing $4 or $5) or just shell out the extra $10 to buy it and add it to my ever growing classic movie DVD collection. I'm a big Bing fan and LOVE Grace Kelly in many of her movies (especially Hitchcock's Rear Window my favorite of all his masterpieces!) but I'm not sure I could get into the plot. I rather like Grace as the glamour doll that she is and adore Bing's rich voice.

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"? Wow, you've got some great viewing ahead of you. North by Northwest and Vertigo are both excellent, and Roman Holiday is one of the most charming movies I've ever watched.

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"? Well, I've not seen the Country Girl, but I did see Manchurian Candidate over Christmas. It's a very good film, it didn't start until late and I was very tired but I just couldn't leave the sofa... very gripping!

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"? The Country Girl is good... in a depressing, just-barely-expanded-from-the-original-stage-play kind of way. Both Kelly and Crosby give excellent, de-glammed, dead-serious performances, so it's an unusual picture. Definitely recommended, but keep in mind that it's quite grim viewing...

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?That may be true, but I saw The Philadelphia Story when I was still a kid, so it's hard for me to imagine. Besides, growing up when I did, I considered Sinatra, Crosby, and even Armstrong a bunch of antique alchoholic hacks - it took me decades to finally peel that concept back, find my way to their earlier great material, and discover their astounding greatness... |

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"? I really didn't like High Society, I ended up switching channels after about 30 minutes. Star power doesn't always make a film. I wouldn't pay to rent it. It's bound to show up on TCM or even a PBS station.

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"? Well, based on everyone's advice, I decided to wait on both The Country Girl and High Society and stick to the movies I already have but have yet to watch.

Re: Has anyone seen "The Country Girl"?DV ~ If you don't mind watching a commercial or two...you'll find the trailers for quite a few old movies here http://www.videodetective.com/movies/. They've had many of the titles I've searched for...and give you a bit more to go on than a plot summary. |
