Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

From the QM website:

The new Queen Mary Art Deco Festival, presented by the RMS Queen Mary Foundation in association with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5, 2005, aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. The Festival is expected to become an annual event for the historic ship, long considered an Art Deco treasure. The proceeds from all activities will benefit conservation and restoration of the impressive collection of original art aboard the 1936 ocean liner. More information will be available in the coming months at www.queenmary.com or www.adsla.org.

Activities will include a Friday evening welcome reception sponsored by the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, a gala fund-raising ball and auction on Saturday, city and shipboard tours, lecture programs, a car show, bookstore, film festival and many opportunities to dance and enjoy music from the era. Art Deco attire is encouraged. The Exhibit Hall will provide a location for exhibits and displays as well as opportunities to buy and sell Art Deco treasures.

A $139 Hotel Queen Mary rate will be available as will full Festival admission and individual event tickets. Most activities will be scheduled Friday evening through Sunday, and pre- and post tours will be available during the day on Friday and on Monday.

The Festival will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the 1925 Paris Exposition, birthplace of the Art Deco movement, and celebrate the Queen Mary's 70th Anniversary Season that began last year with the anniversary of her launch and naming (September 26, 1934) at Clydebank, Scotland, and continues through 2006 with the 70th anniversary of her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York (May 26-June 1, 1936).

Other organizations participating in planning for the Festival are Long Beach Heritage, the Historical Society of Long Beach, Long Beach Public Corporation for the Arts, the City of Long Beach Office of Historic Preservation, and the Steamship Historical Society of America, Southern California Chapter.

Co-Chairs for the event are John Thomas and RMS Queen Mary Foundation Executive Director Lovetta Kramer. Long Beach Resident John Thomas owns Art Deco Dimensions in Long Beach and is a Committee Member of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles.

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

Definitely a toughie--several people with the ADSC are considering a hop south for the event. But it's right before The Gatsby, and that can be a pretty busy weekend!

I don't know if the ADSLA is going to make this a regular annual event, but The Gatsby definitely is! Anyway, maybe this is a way to toss the coin--who's planning on going to which event?

I'm definite for The Gatsby, and a maybe for the QM.

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

Well, I'm definitely in for the Gatsby. I've been reading about it even before I moved to California and each year I make plans to go and then chicken out in the end.

But this year I'm definitely going. I'm even auditioning a possible Gatby outfit today at work in Carmel complete with newly bobbed hair and the cutest little cloche hat. I'm quite a hit with the tourists, I can assure you. I thought I was in the running for the village eccentric until I saw a sweet little old lady wearing a turban and a fur stole over her jogging suit......carrying a leash with no dog attached to the end of it. <sigh> I guess I've got a long way to go to be truly eccentric but I'll keep trying!

As for the QM event, I really, really, really want to go there since the QM is just about my favorite place on Earth. I'm in the process of convincing my husband that it'll be a fun event. He's totally there as far as wearing a tux to the ball, he loves dressing up but he's not so sure about casual vintage stuff for the rest of the time. I'll keep working on him.

It would be lovely to meet some ADSC people there, would make the Gatsby the next week much more fun!

Well, do be sure to introduce yourself at The Gatsby! I suspect that Theresa and I will be tent-hoppers instead of host and hostess this year (it's a lotta work!); but we'll have buckets of champagne at the ready, and we'll intorduce you to some of the folks

Word on the street is that Dean Mora will be playing the QM. This makes it a "must go"!!

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

We've booked a first-class cabin, and there are still a few left. Anybody else in for the fun? The QM is a deco paradise, and the cabins are very well laid out--of course, so is the bar, and if you stay there long enough, you'll be, too. B)

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

Crikey, this is looking good. Dean Mora has some new things in his book, we're planning a pre- and post-Gala floating cocktail party--several of us have adjacent rooms--and we'll likely do white tie and morning formal. Some discussion of whether the men so attired can be prevailed upon to go in faultless attire less trousers. We wanna show 'em some garters. This will probably depend on the strenght of the cocktails, and the insistence of the feminine cajolery. But what doesn't?

BTW: some rooms are still available. If you want to relive transoceanic elegance circa 1936, prowl around the Queen for ghosts, and run the deck in full formal, this is a golden opportunity.

And if you can'tmake it, we'll see you at the Gatsby!!

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

This was an absolutely stunning event.

The Queen is still gorgeous inside. We had about 250 people from the LA deco society, the ADSC, and all over. The staff on board the Queen were courteous and helpful, and the staterooms wonderful. A couple of friends got the suite where Winston Churchill planned the D-Day invasion in the bathtub. Unbelievable.

The Queen is without a doubt the best place in the world to hold a deco event. The parties go on from dawn to dawn, you don't have to risk getting behind the wheel, and the staterooms are snug and comfortable.

If you can put it on you calendar, do so. I've already booked it for next year!

Not yet--but the hangovers still aren't all worn off.

And if you and Jimmy don't promise to be there next year, there will be Hades to Recompense. G'wan--book it now, so you both have no choice when the time comes. lol

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

We'll maybe be there as soon as we become independently wealthy!

AND if it doesn't conflict with the RBS weekend! Though who knows...I imagine David and Mary might be convinced to move it to another time, just possibly. (If they also become independently wealthy. lol )

It does sound grand....and right now, I am in the midst of putting together my outfit for the Dorothy Parker Bathtub Gin Cruise. lol It's not quite so long-lived (and we can't sleep off the hangover onboard), but at least we'll be staying at the Algonquin!

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

I didn't make it to this event in 2005 (which is ironic since I was the one that started this thread and was so sure I was going) but I'm already dreaming about 2006. I hope they hold it again even though the QM's future is a bit uncertain at the moment.

Here's a link to some pictures from 2005. I think there are even a couple of people there you might recognize.

Uh oh, what's going on? Doesn't Disney own the QM?

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

From everythng I heard from the organizers and the folks on The Queen, they plan to do this again for '06--and as often as possible, because they got a good crowd. But I haven't heard anything official just yet. Might bear looking into, because this is to Art Deco what the WWII Weekend is to militaria; just one of the very best events around.

And though I've said it before, I'll say it again--kudos to the ADSLA for a superb job!!!

Nah, Disney jumped ship tongue about 14 years ago. The current operator (I think the city of Long Beach actually owns the ship) is embroiled in a rent dispute with the city and has recently filed for bankruptcy so the city is entertaining other offers including one to tow the ship back to Southampton. I don't think that's a very serious one, though.

Please let me know if you hear anything. We will be living back on the East Coast by September but I definitely want to plan to fly back for this event.

It's official. The Art Deco Festival is on for September 1-4. The reception will be in the Veranda Room this time. Same rate as last year for the first class staterooms. Book early!

Oh, boy! We'll have to get in there soon....

We are SO looking forward to this event!

Joe, is there anything on the site about it?

I can find only the general announcement, and no information on special rates...or do we take care of that through one of the Art Deco societies?

Re: Queen Mary Art Deco Festival

As promised (and straight from the horse's mouth):

The Art Deco Festival Package rate is based on a double occupancy. The
price for two people including tax and parking is $650. The package
includes the following:
*A Friday & Saturday night or Saturday and Sunday night stay.
*Welcome reception at the Verandah Grill (Friday night only)
*Admission to the Pajama Party and Film Festival in the Queens Salon
*Saturday evening Gala Dinner in the Grand Salon
*6 Art Deco lectures
*Admission to the Art Deco Bazaar, Marketplace and Vintage car show.

If you plan on just spending the evening or booking additional evening
with
a package, we offer a special room rate of $139 + tax
.

Also, even if you don't bring a car (unlikely, I know, in LA!) you'll be charged for parking.

And...there is no deposit required to make the reservations.
