*~ cat-eye glasses - meow! ~*

I just bought some 50's cat-eye glasses on eBay! I think I'm going to start a collection. Does anyone else wear vintage eyewear?

Here's a pic.

I'm sort of worried about the fit though. I've never measured my face! I'm hoping that I can get some nose pads put in because my bridge is very thin.

Those look fabulous. I used to wear vintage horn rims. In fact, I'm wearing them in my avatar picture. It took awhile to find someone who would put my prescription lenses in them since they don't adjust like modern glasses. The optical shop at our local Costco ended up doing it. I did find that after wearing them about 50% of the time for 3 years the plastic part of the frames started to turn from brown to white. I don't know what exactly happened, but I can't wash the white off. When I got a new prescription last year I put away the vintage frames and just bought something I liked off the shelf.

Thanks! smile

Horn rims are great! I really dig the look of vintage frames. I hope mine don't change colors though. They're already white so...heh. Hmm, I wonder why yours turned white? How odd.

I've worn vintage cat's eyes for as long as I can remember. Touching on Jumpin' Jim's post, be careful with the vintage plastic frames! The oils of your skin tend to discolor clear plastic and the rubber nose guards - along with sunlight and just plain old age.

Also, the plastic can get brittle with age. Which is why I stoppped buying vintage plastic lenses. I buy metal frames now, but even they can start to go. My current pair, a pair of brushed aluminium and 14K gold cat's eye horn rims, are experiencing difficulties because the plastic coating on the part of the stems that goes over your ears is cracking off.

My prior pair, black cat eye's with mother of pearl inlay were ruined when I spilled nail polish remover on them. It ruined the plastic's finish. My pair before that - tortoise shell cat's eye fell apart into pieces one day without me even touching them.

But don't get too afraid to wear them. All of my glasses lasted for a long time and I got much enjoyment from them. Be careful with your glasses and they should last, but don't be surprised when they do eventually break or fall apart.

The day you posted this message, I had just returned from ordering a new pair of glasses. They are vintage repros. A pair of new tortoise shell cat's eye repros. I got tired of my all my glasses breaking so I finally bit the bullet and bought a new pair for every day wear. I like them because they have the vintage cat's eye shape, not the new current cat's eye shape.

I need to remember to take a picture of my eyeglass collection!

Cool looking glasses, psh! I got a pair of vintage frames while at VLV. I still haven't boguth the lensees for them. Kit Kat got a pair of cat eyes, too. I think she is also lens-free! The salesman told us that we may run into problems like you had Jim, with getting the prescription lenses for them. Thanks for the info, It Girl. That's a cool collection you have there.

Re: *~ cat-eye glasses - meow! ~*

A lot of the chain opticians won't touch a pair of glasses that weren't purchased at their store. I suggest going to a non-chain, small business optician. I've been going to my optician since I was a little girl and he always helps me out with my glasses. You have to be careful though, vintage plastic glasses can crack when they try to make adjustments to them. Another reason why I buy metal glasses now.

I wish the picture I took of my glasses turned out better. You can't see much of the details on the glasses. The clear pair in the front are lucite with flowers reverse-carved across the top, they're my favorite. The pair behind them have sparkly lines in the plastic. The pair behind that have rhinestones and studs on them and the pair behind that is mother of pearl.

I also forgot to add my all-time favorite vintage black catseye Ray Bans. They have the most awesome shape to them.

Re: *~ cat-eye glasses - meow! ~*

I would definitely use vintage frames again if I find another pair I like. I've had new frames that haven't stood up to the amount of daily wear I gave my horn rims. I was just sad to see them discolor.

Overall, I prefer wearing metal frames. Is there a style I should be looking for in men's vintage frames that is not available today? Most of the metal men's vintage frames I have seen are round with wraparaound earpieces. They're hard to find, but I've seen very similar frames that are currently produced. I prefer rectangular frames and that's part of why I loved those brown horn rims. Most horn rims I've seen are round, but my pair is rectangular.

Jumpin' Jim - Ray Ban still makes nice, classic horn rim glasses. I'd recommend them.

Thanks! I just received them a few days ago and they are perfect! They look much bigger in the picture. The bridge is too wide for me but I'll figure out something. I hate that I can't ever find glasses for my thin bridge. I'm always painting or sewing and it's such a pain when my glasses slip right off my nose. :angry2: :glare:

You should post a pic. of your frames! *^_^*

Is that why they slip off? Even my new glasses do that. I thought it was just that my head is skinny!
I don't have a digital camera, so I have to get a cd from my 35mm. Sooooo, I have to wait 'til a complete this roll, then I'll post a pic. smile

On a related note, has anyone tried to get prescription lenses put in sunglass frames? I wouldn't mind having a pair of my Wayfairers turned into prescription shades.

My only worry would be that the frames wouldn't be sturdy enough. Are these vintage or new frames? I would be cautious of paying money to put perscription lenses into frames that were meant to be disposible. Frames for perscription glasses are much sturdier and meant for daily use and wear and tear.
Non-perscription frames aren't nearly as tough.

The only vintage Wayfairers I have are Wayfairer IIs and kinda goofy looking, methinks. The actual Ray-Ban frames seem nice and stout, however. The rest are Made in China junk from the Dollar Store. I guess I'll just stick to contact lenses.

Re: *~ cat-eye glasses - meow! ~*

I've never been able to find a pair of vintage frames that weren't just too tight, and I'd hate to ruin them. But I was so happy that when it came time to buy my first reading glasses, I found these at Rite Aid of all places. I bought three pair. Two black and one in a pretty purplish pink without rhinestones.

Not vintage, but when it came to what I was comfortable in, these are the only reading glasses I can stand to wear.
