Thanks for the reply.  Somebody intro'd Maudlin to me a while back and I was able to grab two copies of Up Front.

Bill is a super cartoonist who got drafted in WW2 and his book centers around his experiences in the war as well as his two cartoon characters, Willie and Joe.

I think once you release your book into the wild then it's pretty much gone for good so getting it back in  scruffy state isn't really an object.

You could always dust off your spirit of altruism and do what they do at Bookcrossing and leave books in public places to be picked up, then trace their progress around the world. The UK membership is growing very fast apparently.
