Re: I MADE it....

Eileen - How did you make the tongue on the snakes? I'm making a snake scarf that I would like to add a tongue to when I'm finished, but I don't know if I want to cut it out of felt and sew it on (felt seems like it would get pilled and ugly fast) or knit one and attach it.

I used double pointed needles and a DK weight yarn.

CO 6 sts
Knit all sts for 2 rows
Knit 3; turn
Knit 3; turn
Knit 3; turn
K2tog, K1
K2tog; cut yarn and pass through loop & secure.

Next, weave it down to the remaining 3 sts, and repeat from the first "knit 3..." to the end.

One snake tongue!

Sew it in place with the still-attached yarn, which I weave down to the start, or with the long tail, if that's what you used to cast on.

It's very easy, if a bit fiddly the first time.

OR--this is what I do for the cat toys--

Cut 6 long strands of yarn; knot together at one end.

Divide into 3 sections of 2 strands each, and braid about a 1/4" or more;

Divide again into 2 sections of 3 strands each--braid into two braids of equal length, and knot separately.

Trim ends to be even; again--voila, one snake tongue!

Absolutely gorgeous! Best wishes to you on your new business venture. May I ask where you get the straw hats? Do you get blanks and block and trim them? They're lovely!

Are you "just" trimming them, or did you make the hat as well?

Thank you. I do everything from scratch. I start with either a parisisol hood as with this one or flat fur felt. My dad makes me the blocks.

Yeah...I probably should have put some spaces in it so that it doesn't get picked up by their software...I'll do that now. Thanks.

The other good way is to replace the @ with "at."

ie: williamd.conwill "at" gmail.com

Because really, who clicks on that link anyway besides spam bots? I always have to cut-and-paste into my email program anyway and that eliminates the stupid "mailto:" part of the HTML.

Re: I MADE it....

Question for the ladies that sew:

The wedding dress that I'm making calls for a 22" zipper down the back. I'm cool with that. But it also asks for 46 buttons down the back as well. I'm thinking that they're purely decorative if there is a zipper - right? Are they meant to just cover the zipper? If that's the case, can I get by with less buttons? The ones that I found that I liked were pink crystal buttons, but they would be really, really expensive if I were to buy all 46. I could probably get by with a dozen or so, huh?

Whaddaya think?

Yes, It would appear that they are purely decorative. You can get away with as many as you think looks good. It just won't have quite the same traditional look of the wedding dress that buttons up the back with tons of tiny buttons.

Re: I MADE it....

Well, I didn't make it but on Saturday I got something to help me make things!

I got myself a bargain adjustable dressmakers dummy for £7.50 at a local table top sale. Brand new they cost £150 so I'm a happy girl Last time I used one I didn't get on with it as it was my flatmates and just not the right size, but this one is a petite/ misses model so the proportions are correct for me so hopefully it will work nicely.

Todd consigned the unstuffed duct tape double of me to the rubbish bin. I couldn't find any cheap stuffing and it was rather disturbing seeing my body double suspended from the window each time I went into the sewing room!

Whoop!

That's wonderful. I'm on the look-out for one. There's the most terrific 50's halter dress I have, but I just can't get the darts right w/o a little help.

My husband told me, "Oh, you want one of those? I've seen them all the time in the thrift shops for about $10.00."

He's going to shops I don't know about!
