That's gorgeous, Lindy! When are you going to start a business knitting 40's sweater blouses? You'd bankrupt me for sure!

*hee* Considering how long it takes to knit, you would be bankrupt if I charged by the hour!

I wish I could post the one I just finished, but my bl**dy photo software went wonky and needs to be re-installed...and now we can't find the disc [various blue curses].

Some of the 30s ones are really quick (in so far as knitting can be "quick", that is). There are quite a number on larger needles. Also many in crochet (not my thing yet).

Check out Iva Rose Reproductions, if you haven't already. She's got a killer selection of that stuff--oh, and check THIS out:

It's a vintage patterns knit along...some gorgeous things are being made.

Re: I MADE it....

Thanks for the links, Lindy! That Knit-Along looks fun. I'm going to have to watch it and maybe it'll get me in the mood to pick up some knitting again. Nowadays, I usually have a hat waiting to be made...and then I have a bazillion other sewing projects that need to be done as well! I actually did buy a couple of books from Iva Rose a while back. I was all set to make the "Persian lamb" cape, yarn picked out and everything, until I got the book in the mail and realized it took a ton of yarn and was going to cost me a fortune!

Have you looked into buying cone yarn? I'm telling you, it's the way to go, especially for big projects.

You can get a pound of yarn for under $20.00, in many cases. And that equals 4 skeins of yarn, generally! (I've found it for as little as ONE DOLLAR a pound, but that's only at big lots type stores.)

Re: I MADE it....

I haven't. I'll have to take a look. Do you usually see novelty type yarns on cones too? That's part of the problem. In order for this cape to come out looking right, you have to get a yarn that creates the faux persian lamb look.

Re: I MADE it....

Yes, actually.

Try eBay if you can't find old yarn warehouses, but those warehouse places (or big lots stores) will have a better, cheaper selection.

I imagine you need a bouchle type yarn? I've found that on cones...a wool/nylon blend. The wool looks homespun, and it's plyed with a strand of nylon. Kind of bumpy, just right for fake mouton.

Oh, hey...you're in San Francisco? From what I recall, there are some great places there to yarn shop. Tell you what--I'm going to see if there's a thread on Knitty for your area (for yarn shops and so on). I'll get back to you on it.

Re: I MADE it....

The last time I knit anything was in 1982 when I was a kid. A christmas scarf for my Dad, with dropped stitches everywhere. I think he still has it believe it or not. I think it would be divine to have time to knit, but I don't even have time to water my lawn (poor dead thing!). I need sprinklers, and 36 hours in one day.

I have been working on hair flowers.... but that's everyday! Maybe when I get some of the new styles up I'll post some photos.

Retrokitten, you should post some photos your most recent hats! Have you seen these, everyone? They are amazing. I have already bought two, including the one with the green ribbon she posted earlier, and a custom order one! I can't stand how fabulous they are.

Looks like everything near you is very pricey (not a surprise, but I thought it was worth a try).

I do have some gray boucle....at least 3 pounds of it. Would you be interested in doing a trade? Maybe all three pounds for making me a dress? (I've got killer patterns & even material.)

It's skeined but unwashed at this point. I could wash, dry and even wind it for you, if you don't have a swift and a ball-winder.

The gray would look nice, too--I used to have a streaky gray Persian lamb stole. My camera software isn't working now, so I can't post a pic but I can send you a snippet in an envelope so you can actually get your hands on it first, if you'd like.

Oh my word. Those are AMAZING!

I normally make all of my dresses since larger size dresses are hard to find or out of my budget. Here are two that I'm selling on eBay.

Re: I MADE it....

Lindydiva, I was wondering if you'd ever found the cold tape that you mentioned earlier in this thread. I bought a 1940's perisan lamb cape that needs a few inches of seam repaired, and I can't seem to find it anywhere online. I'm thinking of contacting a local fur repair service tomorrow, but I'm not sure if they'll want to sell me just the tape.

Retrokitten, here it is, but this book was published in 1998, so I hope they're still around!

"Professional supplies for working with fur. Catalog, $3."

Cold tape is used to make the edges sturdy, sort of a bias tape for fur. There's also sticky flannel and another kind of tape, I forget what it's called, sometimes, I think, they are used in lieu of sewing.

You'll also need an exacto knife, if you're doing any trimming, and it should be cut from the skin side.

Hope this helps!

Here's the 1934 set:

That 1934 set is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I need to ake the time to learn to knit and crochet but with all the other hobbies I have there just isn't time. I'll be doig well if I can become a decent sewer. I can crochette a little and I have a pattern fro a cute fleted purse with a rosette that doesn't look too hard.

Keep an eye out for vintage crochet patterns! There were tons of pretty hats and sweaters to make with crochet back then...bags, too. I haven't seen many skirts, but there were also dresses.

Just brush up your crochet a little, and you'll be wowing us! (I'm lousy at crochet...that little bit of work around the neck in the sweater practically did me in. )

One of the things I want to make is an alpaca cape, and I'd like to line it (eep...) and put fox trim at the collar. I'll probably be yelling for help if I get that far!

I called them yesterday, and the man I spoke to was extremely helpful. He recommended that I order cold tape in sheet form by the yard rather than a roll of tape, cut strips to use on the edges as the tape would normally be used, sew the seam, then cut another square of cold tape to put over the mend from the back. I'm considering putting strips over all the seams as reinforcement while I have the lining open as well. Thanks again for the recommendation, Lindy. Re: I MADE it....

Here's my latest experiment: knitting needles. I'm pretty pleased with them, and want to make some more; this way I can craft them to my own specifications!

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e111/lindydiva/DIYKnittingNeedles.jpg

The straights are No. 8s, and the tiny ones will either be glove needles when I get more dowels, or they're cable needles now. The medium size are No. 3 sock needles.
