Re: Hurrah!

Lovely! Really the only way to enjoy "North by Northwest" is in a theater!

But why no Irene Dunne films?? She was a Louisville native!! (To say nothing of being one of the most beautiful women ever to grace a screen.)

Re: Hurrah!

Argh! The forum ate my post!

Okay, here we go again...ZSC, I agree about Miss Dunne, she's wonderful. These are some of my favorites:
The Joy of Living (with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.); Love Affair (with Charles Boyer)—I'll take this over An Affair To Remember anyday!; Theodora Goes Wild (with Mervyn Douglas, I think)....there's also a funny film with Fred MacMurray (he plays a cowboy whom she marries...can't think of the name of it).

Re: Hurrah!

Lindydiva is right as usual! "Theodora Goes Wild" is one of the best screwball comedies, I wish Dunne had done (Sorry that was unavoidable) more comedies. The archetype of the perfect woman!!

Re: Hurrah!

ZSC, did you know that was her first comedy? (Remember, she used to be known for those Women's Weepies!)

Re: Hurrah!

No, I didn't! For a first comedy, she was amazing in that film. She was never in a film with Jean Arthur, was she? Jean Arthut and Carole Lombard were fantastic together in "My Man Godfrey," another all-time fave screwball.

Re: Hurrah!

I love My Man Godfrey! Lombard & Powell were divorced by then, but she convinced him to do it, she knew it would be perfect for him.

Jean Arthur's wonderful. How about The Devil and Miss Jones? I even have that one in the radio play version.

And...Ginger Rodgers in Bachelor Mother (which I adore)—that was David Niven's first starring role.

This isn't technically a comedy, but how about No Man of Her Own? (The one with Lombard & Clark Gable). It's the only film they ever did together...and rumor has it they didn't even like one another!

                     I haven't seen "Bachelor Mother" in ages--what a great movie--and a daring topic for 1939!

Yes. They really knew how to get around the censors  big_smile

I love that opening shot, where you realize you're only looking at the store's toy model of the skyline...and that movie has got such a great cast.

My favorite line is "You could, too, with those shoulders!" (From Ginger's character to that of Niven's old girlfriend...RE: going stag).

The look on that woman's face...!

Re: Hurrah!

Say what one might about the ills of censorship, it forced writers to come up with some extremely funny and subtle ways of saying things. And that's always a delight!

                     "...and that's not all!"

That's where the thin material/ high front/ low back of many 30's gowns comes from.

I wear said gowns, and you can rest assured that those beauties turn many more heads than some silly mini-dress!
