swing kid lydi is finally swingin!

This has been on the list of the top ten wishes of my life for a very long time. And I learned on my birthday too! On October 22, I met the most delightful gentleman who happens to be my best friend's husband's best friend. It was the day before their wedding and the whole bridal party was hanging out at their house. And it was discovered that Jeremy not only is handsome, artistic and athletic, smart and suave, but he can cut a rug! You guys will think this is crazy but he is the first guy I have ever met in person who actually knows how to swing dance. (at least that I've known knows) So of course he taught me. And of course it was one of the best half hours of my life!!

I learned the basic swing step and a handful of turns, tricks, kicks, and hand positions. I don't really remember the names but I think the stop-sign turn and the kettle position were two. I think he taught me the lindy hop step but it looked suspiciously like the shag so I might have been confused. But the best part was, he did one of those moves where he swung me up in the air and around on his hips! I nearly died.

I can't say I'm a natural, but then I've always been a bit on the awkward side. With some more practice I'll be fine. So far I've only had that initial lesson, but he told me about a club an hour away where they have swing night every single tuesday for $5.00! I had no idea! As soon as we can get together with our mutual friends to teach them the moves, (and get me brushed up a little more) the four of us will be out on the dance floor! I can't wait! I get all fluttery just thinking about it.
So there's the year's good news on my end.  lol
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

That's fabulous!  I dance like I've got combat boots permanently attached to my two left feet, but my wife's got rhythm to spare.  Unfortunately she informed me the other night that she has absolutely no interest in learning to swing dance. sad

I guess I'm not suprised, she's not real into the music.  I may yet get her to do the ballroom thing, however, she was quite pumped to learn that for our wedding, we just never got time.

Big Cheese, I'm sorry...I know what that's like, having your other half not be interested. But the ballroom thing sounds promising.

Swingkidlydi, that's fantastic! There is nothing like that first time out learning. I'll never forget mine. smile

Yes, she confirmed it the other day, she'd love to learn ballroom dancing.  Maybe we can compromise and listen to "String of Pearls" and "Moonlight Serenade" when we dance.

Splendid.  Though I am gonna miss "In the Mood."

"I'm Getting Sentimental Over You" is probably the most romantic tune ever, though.

Sorry, Swingkid, that I managed to hijack your post. sad

Re: swing kid lydi is finally swingin!

It's alright, BC, I'll just snag it back!

Announcement: I finally learned the lindy hop! and have successfully wowed my entire school by having a dance partner who knew what he was doing!

Peppermint Ball is my school's annual dance. Fortunately, the regular band is a big band and they play tolerable, and sometimes even excellent, music. Mostly 70's standards for shag dancing but there's some swing in there too.

I had the excellent fortune of attaining the gentleman I mentioned above's phone number, and the even more excellent fortune at finding him free and willing the night of the dance!

it was one of the highlights of my entire life. my first chance to swing at a real dance. Now I finally have a bit of a grasp on the elusive lindy hop, and that very exciting around and around and up move he taught me earlier.

Yes, I probably sound like a braggart, but it is such a pathetic acheivement, I prefer to see it as sharing my small triumphs with someone who might actually care.

Yay!

Nope, it IS a triumph.

I'm going dancing tonight--first time in weeks, I fell a while back and haven't been out.

I. Cannot. Wait.

Believe me, I know how you feel!

Practically danced my feet off last night, the lost sleep was worth it. Even at 5:30 in the morning I could get up!

And...more dancing on Saturday, too.

And another dance next Saturday!

Sounds like you had a great time Lindydiva and Swingkidlydi! I love dancing- it's something that just makes me very happy.

Hopefully, we'll be able to go to one or two dances before Christmas but otherwise it'll be in the New Year I think- and that's just a very long time to wait!!

You people are extremely fortunate. The only chances I get close to flirting with Terpsichore are when there's nobody in the house and I start mimicking Fred Astaire during a movie...

Hang on a minute, you're at art college aren't you.

Usually more totty there than you can shake a stick at, so why not start up a group for wanabee swing dancers?

Wouldn't have worked in my day, as I went to technical college. Unfortunately a woman was a rare sight indeed, and they could beat you at an arm wrestle and needed to shave twice a day!

Re: swing kid lydi is finally swingin!

I know at Central there was a nice swing dancing group, I kinda wish I'd stuck with it.  The trouble is that it was made up almost exclusively of couples and it was hard to find a partner.

That was my freshman year and swing was on its way out as a fad, though, so I'm not sure how much longer the group lasted.  I got more heavily into cars instead.

Re: swing kid lydi is finally swingin!

I sure would love to start a swing club at my school. I even know some girls interested. big drawback though: no men! only the off grad student, but they never stick around long enough for any of us undergrads to get to know them. sometimes it really stinks going to a women's college.
Supposedly Jeremy (the guy i was talking about) is starting an underground swing movement at his school. Considering it's a very conservative, strictly anti-dancing Christian college, I don't know how that's gonna work out...but i told him say the word and I'd be there...

I bet it's a far more exciting experience when done clandestinely...particularly under the nose of a very strict authority.

Indeed.  Sounds like the basis for some interesting fiction!

Re: swing kid lydi is finally swingin!

Update:

My parents have forbidden me from going out swing dancing. Well, not exactly forbidden, and not exactly all swing dancing, just strongly recommended against/withheld permission (and ride) from the only place I know of to go swing dancing, that club an hour away.
All semester long I'm irritatingly unable to go to the club because of a class on tuesday nights. So I'm impatiently counting down the days until my first free tuesday, after school let out, when I would finally get to go. And then I get drafted into the Pirates of Penzance and have rehearsals on tuesday nights, That lasts for a few weeks and when all that's finally over and I'm truly free, my parents decide to put their foot down. After keeping their mouths shut all these months and letting me believe the only thing keeping me from swing dancing was schedule conflicts.
I could do the whole sneak out the window and hitch a ride trick or however kids have been escaping their parents' rule for centuries, but I'm too much of a good girl for that. I'll just suffer.

Not all is lost, though. My friend Bryant's youth pastor is a swing fanatic (or at least would be if his seminary allowed singles to dance) and so in celebration of his marriage to the lovely Sara, his July wedding will be followed by a reception with swing dancing. I am invited. The drawback: my friend (whose youth pastor it is and whose inevitable dance partner I will be) doesn't know how to swing dance. Well we'll just have to figure it out.
