WHY did they change the formula?

A while back in a thread on the Vermont Country Store someone said she didn't like "Evening in Paris", and I found myself disagreeing--I'd found some from the 50's at Reading and loved it.

Then we found a bottle (full!) from the 30's--also divine, and exactly the same scent.

My mother bought me a new bottle for Christmas...and the d*amn stuff has changed dramatically. It's now VERY, very powdering and simply dripping with vanilla, not my thing.

Mind, the older formula has a touch of both, and that's fine. But it doesn't smell like my powder box collided with my baking cabinet!

Re: WHY did they change the formula?

Yeah, that's true!

So what's with all the zero coke, diet coke, cherry coke, diet cherry coke, lemon coke, etc....etc...

Too many choices!!!! Or am I being just a guy?

Re: WHY did they change the formula?

Well, all I can say is that Coke zero is actually much closer to the taste of "regular" Coke than Diet Coke, if you're into that sort of thing. The rest of the diet flavors you can keep!

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

I remember quite vividly the taste of the peanut butter when I was a kid and it's changed dramatically.

I do not approve.

Re: WHY did they change the formula?

Perhaps Coca-cola ought to go back to the original recipe, when it had cocaine in it.

Somehow I don't think they'd need much marketing!

That was me! I'm sorry you had to find out the change for yourself. I've become wary of words like modernized, updated or re-imagined , as they're usually code for "buggered up". I had a similar experience with "My Sin". I'd head so many legendary things about it, and when I discovered a place that sold the recreated perfume I jumped at it.

My husband told me I smelled like a urinal cake.

I can't say I've learned my lesson. I still hunt down items that haven't been in production for decades. My holy grail would probably be a jar of Ingrahams Milkweed Cream. I still get myself up in knots over which perfume (out of dozens) I should buy next at the VCS, so I'll still be a guinea pig and reporting back here for as long as I can. If only they sold sample sizes!

Re: WHY did they change the formula?

Oh joy! One of my very favourite subjects. I have one to add. Pepsi. The Pepsi we have now is absolutely NOT the formula I drank as a kid with pop tops that actually *HORRORS!* came off of the can. Sure you might bleed a little, but you know, as a kid you had respect for things I don't see in today's generation and I suspect some of it went back to the fact you just didn't know what might kill you if you fooled around with it wrong.

Anyhow I digress. Pepsi itself stated in a book I read at least 10 years ago that they'd changed their formula 6 times by then. More sugar, more carbonation, you are not imagining it when you think the stuff is harsher and sweeter than it used to be. You want old formula Pepsi? You find it in the weirdest place, Sam's Choice Cola from Wallet Mart. That is the stuff! I loved it, I was a Pepsi boy who grew up to be a Coke man 'cuz after New Coke they left the Classic alone, but my Pepsi had transmogrified beyond recognition.

"Transmogrified". An EXCELLENT Calvin and Hobbes quote, my friend! Just hearing it again makes me think of the adventures of Spaceman Spiff and his time machine.

Thanks for the tip about Pepsi. And allegedly, if you still want the taste of real coke - well, mid century coke without the cocaine - just slip south of the border. They still make it with cane sugar instead of corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. It's still got that great, slightly brown-sugar aftertaste to it.

And, completely off topic from perfume, has anybody else noticed that the caramel apple empanadas at taco bell taste EXACTLY like McDonalds apple pies from the 60s and 70s, before they changed to their current fried white bread and apple slices monstrosity?
