White Rotary Electric Sewing Machines

I just got my first sewing machine, and it is, of course, an antique. Judging from its looks and number, it's from someplace between 1927 and 1939....I think probably mid-30's. It's in its own little cabinet, and electric.

A friend who has a vintage shop put it aside for me last year, but I just got it today.

So far as they know, the motor runs, but they don't know when it was last used.

I know before I start merrily in it'll need some cleaning and oiling.

It came with what appear to be most, if not all of the manuals, but I really don't know where to begin.

(And btw: I haven't used a sewing machine, any sewing machine, since about 1978!)

Help!

Re: White Rotary Electric Sewing Machines

*bumpity bump*

(I know, I know, I'm being geeky here.)

But I can't help it, I've spent all day ogling the manuals, and Googling vintage sewing information...even e-mailed the company that used to be White and they're sending me a copy of the 77 series manual for free!

Turns out my machine was made in 1935. Howzat for a guess? wink

Tomorrow probably I'll go to the fabric shop and get oil and some more bobbins, and some fabric. :plane:

Eileen, I'm very excited for you! My grandmother gave me a nice industrial one from the 40's then sold it from under me so she could get a brand new one that spends more time in the repair shop then actually sewing garmets.

Thanks! I'm really hoping to give it a test drive soon...I dragged out some patterns last night, and I'll probably make the skirt, at least!

Ohh that sounds exciting! How great that the manufacturer is sending you the manuals. You'll have to keep us up to date with what you are making and post a picture of it!

My first sewing machine was a hand me down from my mum, from the 70s I think. She used it when she ran a small clothes label and would make all the clothes for her stall on it, as well as my clothes. By the time she gave it to me it was so worn out from work that I had tremendous trouble with the tension that it made sewing feel such a chore!

Re: White Rotary Electric Sewing Machines

Well, good news & bad news.

Made it to the fabric store, got oil, fabric, notions....came back, oiled and greased the machine and started to thread it.

There's no bobbin case! sad (Thus far, the only thing that seems to be missing.) Luckily, the manual has a good photo of the one required, so I hope that when I locate one, I'll know it's the right sort.

It looks a bit different from others I've seen, though the bobbins aren't peculiar at all.

I've e-mailed a few places and will continue to look. This w/e we're planning on an outing to a very good antiques mall, perhaps we'll find one there...

You can always look on the almighty eBay for that bobbin case.

Re: White Rotary Electric Sewing Machines

Yep. Nothing so far, but I'll keep looking; last night I checked US and Canadian eBay.

I'm also going to make a copy of the photo in the manual so's to bring it along when I'm thrifting, or to have in case I find a sewing machine repair shop.
