Which books do you REREAD every year?

Ok mine are "Pride and Prejudice," "Emma," "Shag," "Bridgit Jones" (both), "The Official Preppie Handbook." What books do you read more than once?

Re: Which books do you REREAD every year?

Almost every October I read at least some of Ray Bradbury's The October Country, or at least one of his other books. Usually that one, though.

Tons of 'em.

Let's see....Tam Lin (by Pamela Dean), all of Jane Austen, most mysteries (I'm in it for the story & characters, not Whodunnit), Dorothy Parker, movie biographies of favorite actors, Berlin Diaries (by Marie [Missie] Vassiltchikov, Shakespeare, Helene Hanff's books, the Betsy & Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace, some of the Stephen W. Meader books (boys' adventure stories set in the 'teens and up)....

I read Watership Down over and over. Also Mr. Timothy, various Dickens books, and Conjure Wife by Fritz Lieber. That is a great story.

I read Fred Saberhagen's A Century of Progress nearly every year. Particularly if I'm preparing to visit Chicago.

Y'know, sometime I ought to try buying something non-fiction about the '33-'34 Chicago Fair.

I re-read any Fitzgerald, O'Hara, Benchley, Wodehouse, Chandler, Hammett, Nin and Parker, in my collection, fairly often.

Also the Alice books of L. Carroll, and...

Actually, many of the far too numerous books on my shelves get re-read every few years. I occasionaly go on a jag of re-reading some of the books of my youth.

Hmm.

Re: Which books do you REREAD every year?

Blessed with a near-photographic memory for anything trivial, I virtually never reread anything. However, there are few things I have read more than once:

Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy, and a few of her SF novels too

Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (I reread it before the films came out)

Anne Rice's first few vampire books, and The Witching Hour (her finest book, IMHO)

Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon, and several of the better books in her Darkover SF series

Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay - once simply wasn't enough

Clifford Simak's Way Station - one of my favorite SF novels

Sinclair Lewis' major novels - Main Street, Babbitt, Dodsworth, etc. - my favorite now-practically-forgotten American author

Ironically, for a former English major, I feel no need to revisit the works of the great British authors, most American novels and plays, etc. But I'm always happy to see the new film adaptations...

No, it worked for me....tell you what.

Just Google this:

"Robert Benchley Society"

You'll find it. (I also recommend you check out the Dorothy Parker Society. If you don't find the link on the RBS page, again, just Google for it.)

The only books I've reread are 'Up the Junction' and 'Poor Cow' by Nell Dunn, two great books about working class south Londoners in the 60s! One of the characters even lives where I grew up smile

Re: Which books do you REREAD every year?

Do magazines count?

I've got a whole stash of prewar Reader's Digests that I tend to re-read alot! Also some Popular Mechanics that I have. Ummm....some other titles I re-read all the time are the Ernie Pyle stuff.

As far as fiction, ahhh...not sure...maybe every couple years or when I'm bored, I'll reread some stuff......

Re: Which books do you REREAD every year?

Well, nearly every year anyway:

Kerouac's "On the Road"
Hemingway, both his works and the various bios.
Joseph Goulden's "The Best Years 1945-1950"
Bill Mauldin's "Back Home" (Love, love LOVE it!)
Raymond Chandler's "Farewell, My Lovely" (Haven't read it in four years...but soon) I really need to re-read all of Chandler this Summer.

Re: Which books do you REREAD every year?

I've realized that I also re-read the Harry Potter books, quite often.

Go ahead, laugh...especially as I dug in my heels and refused to even bother until a fellow cubicle prisoner badgered me into it (the fact that she's something of a classical scholar tipped the balance). By then I think the third book had already been published.

J.K. Rowling is a brilliant writer and storyteller.

Sometimes I also re-read the books of Majorie Sharpe (she's the one who wrote Cluny Brown, among others...many of them were made into films, in the 30's & 40's.)

Re: Which books do you REREAD every year?

I haven't reread it in quite some time, probably since I read it the first time, but lately I've been eyeing that high school English class staple, The Outsiders. I only remember parts of it vaguely and like A Separate Peace which I recently reread, I want to see if the book is as good as when I first encountered it. A Separate Peace definitely was not as gripping or compelling as I remembered and that kind of upset me.
I'm also debating whether I should buy the book of The Outsiders or the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD movie version. It's a toss up. Even if I buy the movie, I still kind of want to buy the book.
Hopefully I'll still be able to relate.
Peace,
Pete
