In preparation of summer...

As spring rolls on and the weather warms, I'm looking ahead to the hot summer months to come and taking stock of my music collection. It occurred to me that I have virtually no fun beach-type music! Sure, I have more than most people's fair share of exotica (Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Yma Sumac, Robert Drasnin - I just bought his oft-overlooked LP, Voodoo! ) but that type of music doesn't quite work unless one has a pool, tiki bar, and regularly enjoys mai tais by the flickering glow of tiki torches. Plus my people don't typically "get" exotica so I'm left to enjoy it by myself.

Anyway, I'm in the market for some good old fashioned surf rock. I've looked at some of The Ventures' music, and like that they took hits of the day and performed them in their signature style, however all that seems to be available from them are compilation albums. Does anyone know if any of The Ventures' original LP albums were ever transferred, intact, to the CD format, perhaps with bonus tracks? If so, can someone recommend a definitive Ventures album? I love their hit, "Walk Don't Run." In fact, I like nearly every one of the tracks on The Ventures - Walk Don't Run: All Time Greatest Hits so I may pick that up even though it's only got 12 tracks.

Oddly enough I stumbled across The Batman Theme by The Marketts and am totally digging their mix of vocals, Herb Alpert-esque brass, surf guitar, and rock organ.
http://www.oldies.com/i/boxart/large/6/090431655825.jpg
I love most anything Batman (although I'm not crazy obssessed - my room does not look like a comic shop in the slightest!) and am a fan of the TV show as well as the delightfully campy movie that resulted in the 1960s. I debated whether or not to pick up The Batman Theme, but after repeatedly previewing tracks here, at Oldies.com, I can't resist! I'm definitely going to pick this one up, especially for $8.98!

So, long post short, I'm looking for any and all surf rock recommendations, especially full albums from The Ventures. Summer's just around the corner and I want to be ready!
Peace,
Pete

Re: In preparation of summer...

You missed a great Ventures show down at Asbury Lanes a few weeks ago,it was a real thrill to hear Nokie Edawards play all the ventures hits live.Consensus seems to be that most folks fave record is VENTURES IN SPACE...its Deke Dickersons favorite and he has his own ventures tribute band just for fun.Their rec are availible on their own on cd but it takes some looking around.
As for current touring bands you cant go wrong with any of LOS STRAITJACKETS releases, and they are a MUST SEE live........a total blast.
If push comes to shove my 2 fave surf records of the past 10 years belong to bostons THE FATHOMS.Tho no longer together they released 2 great albums dripping with great songs and reverb. They are FATHOMLESS from 1996 and OVERBOARD from 1998.
Nothing says summer like Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys as well..........

Re: In preparation of summer...

I don't even know what's available anymore, but I've got a Ventures double-album of their greatest hits. I can't for the life of me remember what it's called but I know it's red! I've also got "The Ventures Play Telstar and the Lonely Bull" on vinyl. I burned it to a CD and added "Walk, Don't Run" as a bonus track since it's not on the album. Lastly, I recommend... bugger, I think it's "The Roots of Rock: Rockin' Insturmentals." It's a bunch of insturmentals from the Ventures and other artists. Good stuff.

Re: In preparation of summer...

I'll back up davew's post as some great advice. The Fathoms are terrific, Frankie (lead guitar/vocals) is in a couple of other bands up here (Cranktones, The Spurs)....apparently the Fathoms (Frankie's New Fathoms) have played a very rare gig in the past couple of years, but as Dave pointed out, no recordings for a while.
Los Straight's are amazing, so definately go with that.
See if you can find anything from The Astronauts back in the 60's/70's....great stuff.
The Surfari's.
And definately "Man or Astroman?". Everything by them is simply phenomenal.

Haha! I've got Walk Don't Run as my mobile ringtone.
I'll concur with the above as far as Los Straitjackets and Man Or Astroman? go. Especially Destroy All Astro-Men and Experiment Zero.
You'll also need some Satan's Pilgrims and Bomboras too.
You may get some inspiration from the compilations; Surfin' Around The World and Hang 11 (Mutant Surf Punks) if you can find them. They aint 60's but they rock!

If you feel the urge to absorb some sugary sweet sounds of the summer then you wont go wrong with the perfect pop of Honeyrider.

Re: In preparation of summer...

Woooo lots of recommendations! I didn't think this thread would take off quite like it did! Thanks guys!

Well, as per my original post, I did order The Batman Theme by The Marketts. It's a perfect cross section of 1966 space age bachelor pad lounge and surf rock. I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it!

I held off on buying anything by The Ventures, although I may pick up something with "Walk Don't Run" on it in the months ahead.

I'm not so much looking for compilation albums, since they are rarely cohesively sequenced and therefore do not flow well from song to song, but I will check them out online.

I was not aware that the music of Los Straitjackets was so HOT (read: popular)!!! I was definitely looking for vintage (read: 60s) surf rock albums but now I'm thinking of just buying a Los Straitjacket's CD! I previewed their Christmas disc and thought it was pretty nifty - I imagine their non-holiday stuff is equally enjoyable.

And, BigCheese327, I also listen to the Beach Boys in the summer! How can you not? I have two of their CDs, The Sounds of Summer and Pet Sounds. Classic!

Peace,
Pete

I realise that some people love comps and some people hate 'em but what do you mean by "cohesively sequenced"? Me, I prefer a genre-specific compilation to be as varied as it possibly can within it's stated remit and that a compilation is good just so long as the tracks are good.

It's obviously all subjective, but the fact that comps don't flow appeals to me. It's like opening your presents on xmas morning. I love that they may all relate to a certain era/genre/interest but I'd be a bit disappointed if they were all part of a set of something. If you see what I mean.

Lost Soul, I totally see what you mean. And, a compilation based around a single unifying factor, i.e. all surf rock, all lounge music, etc. IS, in fact, cohesively sequenced. Perhaps I'm thinking of those ubiquitous (improper word usage?) Now That's What I Call Music Volume 2,987,498 and how there are hip hop, pop, and rock tracks thrown together seemingly without any thought to how one song sounds before or after another. To have a fast rap song with a solid bass groove follow an introspective ballad MUST be jarring and make for an odd listening experience. Those are the types of compilations I loathe.

I really can't say I hate compilations since I'm a huge fan of the Ultra-Lounge series and I just realized that each and every one of the volumes in that series is a compilation album! However, they are based around a theme and much care and concern was given to how the albums flowed from track to track.

That being said, I guess I rather enjoy compilations!

Pete

Re: In preparation of summer...

Summer makes me crave rockabilly.

There's always Wanda Jackson; I've also got a lot of Big Sandy, The Starlight Drifters, the Two-Timin' Three, The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash (country, really); the man in black himself, oh, quite a bit of stuff!

Oh, a Detroit band to check out: Cash O'Reilly and His Downright Daddies. Good stuff.

Re: In preparation of summer...

Still on my 60s surf rock kick, I've made friends with the wonderful people at Sundazed Music (http://www.sundazed.com) and purchased the following newly reissued surf and hot rod albums for my summer listening pleasure:

The Super Stocks
Thunder Road
Surf Route 101
School is a Drag

The Kickstands
Black Boots and Bikes

The Knights
Hot Rod High

Jan & Dean
Popsicle

The Hot Doggers
Surfin' U.S.A.

Richie Allen & The Pacific Surfers
The Rising Surf
Surfer's Slide

The Super Stocks, Kickstands, and Knights were all essentially Beach Boys-esque imitation studio only bands/vocal groups (they didn't tour as far as I know) and while you may think their music is therefore inferior to the Beach Boys, it actually sounds quite good!

All those harmonies and reverb drenched guitars - it doesn't get much better than this during the summer!
Peace,
Pete

Re: In preparation of summer...

What about Dick Dale, the "King of Surf Guitar"? He played the theme they used in Pulp Fiction and has done a whole album on hot rod rock, that kind of mixes surf and 60s rock. You can't go wrong with him!
