Retro Future

Whilst browsing through Todd's science magazine I noticed a review of a the Retro Future website. Quite a nifty website which looks at the ideas of the future from the past. Like the Osaka Time Capsule which was buried in 1970 which contained 2,008 objects to represent the 20th century including false teeth, a glass eye, a silk condom and a string of fake pearls! The time capsule will be undisturbed for 5,000 years.

Re: Retro Future

Let's hope noone decides to 'test drive' the silk jonny, after sitting around for 5000 years (assuming the human race survives that long- I have my doubts).

I love finding those things.
There was a movie on the other day, the name escapes me, that was set in 1980 and no one had names, just alpha-numeric codes. J-19 was one.

and where are those flying cars we're supposed to have? I want mine!

Re: Retro Future

I love retro-futurism. I would like to see more fiction written in this vein. I think it's also called "dieselpunk" in some circumstances.

Re: Retro Future

Eh, pardon me, but that's just a slang term for a condom isn't it? Little Miss so called politically incorrect.

I'm with you on this one... my favorate movie from the past couple of years is "Sky Captain And The World Of Tommorow." I love the spirit of Adventure from that decade, and wish we could do more to rekindle it.

Re: Retro Future

I love retro-futurism as well... I think I have to add that term to my interests on LJ and MySpace...

A particularly fun look is 'In the Year 2000' cards from the 1900 Paris Expo, where television was mentioned for the first time. And there is the late 19th century "One Hundred Years Hence" Both can be seen here.

Re: Retro Future

I vere more towards what has now become known as 'Steam Punk'. That involves fictional stories and ideas of inventions suppossed or otherwise from the victorian era, often inspired by Jules Verne etc.

One book that's a cracking read if you like this kind of thing is the 'Difference Engine'. Absolutely bonkers, but good fun- Byron is the Prime minister!

I wish they would make it into a film.

I remember an old radio show about a robot-controlled house that the occupants were dead, but it just kept on functioning normally....

Re: Retro Future

Steampunk is a favorite genre of mine as well. Anything Victorian, but fantastical Victorian, even better. And all of it preferably dark.

Ooh. That's been my favorite thing lately. They aren't vintage musically, just lyrically, but there's a great band called The Decemberists that venture into the Steampunk occasionally, as well as singing songs about revenge on the high seas and political intrigue (check out their website, it's just decemberistis.com, I think). On their last album, they sang a song about dirigables, which spawned my fasination with them (see avatar). I'm planning on building one. You know, once I have some money and have any idea how to begin. I wish the future was really full of fleets of air ships

I know this movie! It's called Just Imagine. It's got Maureen O'Sullivan as LN-18 (Get it? Ellen) right? I had this on video for years and I only recently saw it again, but it fascinated me because it was such an early talkie that the lead performers were still wearing cloche hats and rolled stockings. The camera didn;t move and I'll bet you the microphones were still hidden in giant flower baskets and radios.

Best line goes to El Brendel sizing up the Queen's nelly bodyguard.

"SHE'S not the queen...HE is!"

Oh the Steampunk thing. My husband found it before I did. He moons over the Steampunk Workshop site as though it were the other woman, tantalizing him with the promise of a Jules Verne future of brass and wood. Sometimes I think the things they make are beautiful. Sometimes they just looks like props from Van Helsing.

Witness this beautiful flat panel monitor.
