Using your collectibles

Hi everyone,

I was just curious what vintage/antiques you collect that you use in your daily life and not just collect/have/store. For example... If you have a vintage radio that you use I want to hear about that... not that you have 263632 radios that aren't used. If you use a set of vintage tools and not just display them, that is what I want to hear about. Clothes are obvious... but what else do you collect for practical use?

Re: Using your collectibles

Dishes! Dishes! Dishes!

I have a problem. I can't stop buying vintage bowls, plates, pitchers, serving ware, bar ware, and any other kitchen doo-dads that catch my eye. I actually have boxes and boxes of depression glass, milkglass, pyrex, fire king, etc. in my attic because I don't have room for it all in the kitchen.

And I have a huge weak spot for linens and hand tatted and hand embroidered doilies, table runners, dresser scarves, and so on. I love old tea towels, handtowels, pillow cases, and tableclothes especially if they have someone's handy work on them. I also love vintage drapes/curtains and can't stop buying them either.

And I use them all, not much sits on a shelf in my house. I don't see much use in collecting things if I can't enjoy them.

Re: Using your collectibles

Also, I've also been eyeing up Royal Copley pottery on eBay lately and fear I'm on the brink of starting another collection. As if I don't have enough glass/pottery to begin with...

Now everyone should be able to reply to this thread. Where is everybody?

I just thought of more vintage items that I actually buy to use - vintage flower pots and planters. I especially like old McCoy. The more whimsical, the better. I just got a 40s planter that's in the shape of a cat arching it's back Halloween cat style, with the plant hole where the cat's tail should be. I'd just planted a succulent in planter that has the same shape as a puffed out cat tail so it would look like the cat's tail.

Re: Using your collectibles

I'm with you...I like to enjoy my treasured finds. Records (of course) top my list, but napkins, hankies and serving dishes are on there too. I also have a huge weak spot...but for cookie cutters and odd kitchen gadgets...and I'm getting to the point that I have too many aprons, but I just keep buying them...I can't be stopped!! Trying to squeeze a new apron into the rotation is proving to be quite difficult. I would't say that I really have a collection of anything....but more a collection of everything and I put it all to good use. What fun is it to buy something and stash it away somewhere where it can't be appreciated and loved??

Re: Using your collectibles

Oh, yes. I'm big on the I'm-not-a-museum list!

Obviously, as you say, clothing. Linens. Glassware. Pots & pans, baking tins, kitchen utensils [cheese slicers, potato masher, forks, knives, spoons, a hand mixer, mixing bowls]. My paper towel holder. A radio (til the tubes gave out, maybe we'll replace them one day). Aprons.

A shaving mirror as a make-up mirror. Rugs. Furniture. Art. Recipes! Laundry "recipes". My vintage irons, a sprinkling bottle for ironing (with a sprinkler top). Books. Magazines. 78s. The Victrola.

Rag curlers--though the rags are "new"! Vintage marcel wavers, hair slides, hair clips. Vintage jewelry, including watches. Compacts. Furs. Purses (handbags). Girdles, stockings.

Lots more, no doubt, if I could only remember them!

Re: Using your collectibles

I almost always buy vintage versions of things I need, rather than new. So, I end up using those items in place of more modern things. I use my 1940 Sunbeam Mixmaster several times a week with nary a problem; I listen to vintage radios daily. I use my vintage linens whenever possible (not so often right now, though, with a toddler in the house!) and use antique serving dishes and kitchen gadgets. Then there's the vintage furnishings, lamps, etc. etc.....

Oh, and a big d'OH! for me...er. My knitting stuff.

Patterns, books, needles, notions...heck, even vintage yarn, when I can find it! My knitting bag is vintage, too.

I also have a huge apron collection. Even weirder I don't cook. But I just can't leave them there when I see them at a church sale. I always feel that some one took so much time and effort to embroider the designs on them and I have to buy them. I actually thought of taking several and making an apron type circle skirt? Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? Do you think it would work?

I also have a collection of everything and try to use all of it. I use my vintage iron every day. They are sooooo much better then any new iron you could buy. Our funiature is vintage from the 40's, we have a rattan couch and end table. Our living room lamps ect. Well I guess we basically do the same thing that was mentioned before we buy vintage to replace the modern things. It all works better and looks better. We basically live in a time warp.

Re: Using your collectibles

Me, too!

I think I use everything...right now I can't think of anything that's just for looks...

Clothing, stockings/girdles, handkerchiefs, aprons, linens (kitchen and bed), small appliances, furniture, hats, handbags, compacts, umbrellas, jewelry, shoes, dishes, glassware, magazines/books...

I try to only keep the things I'll use, even though I don't use all of it daily. I have several sets of dishes, so I rotate them, etc.

Whatever it is, they don't make it like they used to!!

8 I've been on a calendar, but I've never been on time 8

Re: Using your collectibles

Everything that Mimi listed, I think, for me. The dishes are not everyday, though.

I also have vintage barware, glassware, cocktail shakers...kitchen bits & bobs (from a paper towel holder to salt shakers), furniture, rugs, perfume, vases, I don't know. Fully half of what I own, probably. Including knitting items, a perpetual desk calendar, fountain pens, cigarette holder, compacts, a Victrola.

Luckily, my husband feels the same way I do about this stuff!
