The Crooners

I was listening to the Forties channel while getting ready this morning, and caught a couple of Dick Haymes numbers.

I've only seen him in a few films, and haven't heard too much of his work, but Wow. I'm hooked...

He was reportedly quite a cad and hard to live with, but what a voice!

Who's your favorite of the Crooners? anyone else I should look into?

Re: The Crooners

Fellow PH'er KittenWithaWhip is a Dick Haymes fan, so he does have his boosters. Even if he did smack Rita Hayworth...Haymes' later recording of "It Might as Well Be Spring" is great, but the guy sounded tormented. Brilliant singer.

A few of my personal faves include:

Johnny Hartman: His album with John Coltrane is my favorite vocal album of the 1960s. He sounds like a smoother Billy Eckstine.

Mel Tormé: Not so much the scatting Mel, but the "Velvet Fog" Mel. Beautiful. Try his Swingin' On the Moon CD.

Bing Crosby: Get his earlier, pre-1940s stuff.

Frank Sinatra: I used to go gah-gah over his Capitol years material, but have backtracked into his glorious Columbia years, also the 1940s, which IMO are superior. (never thought I'd say that!)

Re: The Crooners

Johnny Hartman is the only one I don't know...and that's what I'm looking for, names of some of the now-lesser-knowns...

I always preferred Dean to Frank, but I agree about the oldest stuff. Far superior, I think...

Re: The Crooners

Hopefully I'm not repeating earlier stuff, but I've always had a bright spot in my listening for Johnny Desmond. His singing always seems to hit me square in the eyes...taking me back to a lonesome airfield in 1944. Guess he's one of the many singers....

Re: The Crooners

I agree, he is great...but for some reason, I can't sing his style....errr...not that I can even sing at all.... At least I can mumble along to the Mills brothers or the Pied Pipers...

He is a great singer....how does he compare to say Dean or Sinatra to you?

He does have a very unique vocal style. I could imgaine it very hard to sing.
