Why Vintage Is Better.

We all know that vintage clothes are just made better. The style, the details, all that sort of thing...

And jackets were lined. They just were. At almost every level of quality. a detail oft taken for granted.

By just barely touching my hands behind my back, and subtly shrugging my shoulders, I was able to slip out of my swing-style short jacket last night without making a huge spectacle.

It was great.

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

I agree but I also think that designers are now taking that to heart. Have you noticed all the retro inspired designs that are out for fall? Some of the cape coats are beautiful!

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

I think that designers are starting to go back to older styles. But I can not help but feel like a trator or something when I am not wearing vintage. I guess I am in that deep. Has anyone else felt like this?

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

I like that designers are going back to vintage style. I usually start with new clothing because I have so many problems with vintage. Even when a vintage dress fits it usually hard to get into because of the weird placement of zippers and snaps. Was there a reason why they didn't put zippers in the back of a garment where they'd be usefull? I assume it was for esthetic reasons.

Also, if you have curves, some of the vintage items are a little hard to squeeze into.

Tell me about it. I have so often come across a simply darling dress only to find out that either the bust or the waist does not fit. I can't even count the number of little treasures I have lost out on.

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

I guess that's where I get lucky. I am not busty and I have a smaller wasit. My butt and hips are always what keep me from getting some things. I have just lost hope for ever having a nice wiggle dress or anything fitted on the bottm for that matter.

I have the same problem but I haven given up. I just can't accept a life full of A Line and circle skirts. That is partly why I started buying vintage seperates rather than dresses but I still find it difficult. I can't beleive that there weren't people in the past who's hips were more than 10 inches larger than their waist. I am going to start taking things to a tailor.

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

I am quite curvy, somewhat more so through the rear, but I usually have great luck with 1930s-50s dresses. Most of my collection consists of a-line or slim a-line dresses and skirts, and I find vintage clothing fits my build 100 times better than modern clothing (which is never cut narrow enough through the waist.)

It's important to remember that women were heavily girdled in the past, which can have a huge effect on waist and hip size.

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

It ain't just you lovely ladies who have the fitting problem with vintage duds. I have a few vintage suits and I'd love to get more, but it's very hard to find vintage suits over size 40. I have broad shoulders and I'm a size 44, and there just weren't a lot of men my size back in the day.

Very good point-I completely forgot about that. I had mentioned the tiny waists on vintage clothes to a friend, who suggested that maybe the clothes were inteneded for 'juniors.' On average, about how much can a girdle affect size?

A good girdle can make the difference of a whole size and sometimes two for me. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

Thanks for your replies, d.d and Mimi. Wow-that sounds very inviting, yet I can remember hearing my grandmother, and maybe even my mother, discuss the unpleasantness of wearing a girdle. I don't mind tight so much, but certain materials make me 'itchy.' I think it might be worht a try, though!

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

I have a girdle but it has a plastic inbetween the fabric (why?) and for that reason I have never worn it. Other then no plastic in it what would you recomend when buying one ?

I've found that even just wearing a tight slip or something of that nature makes it easier. I'm a bit curvy, and my main problem is not being streamlined in modern undergarments. I have this tacky little Leg Avenue garter slip that really doesn't do much for girdling or holding up my stockings (I think it's cute, though), and even that, being a slick satin, makes my dresses fit better by smoothing out the bumps even a little bit and making the fabric not stick to my skin, bra and underwear. I'm not saying go Leg Avenue instead of a proper under garment, but in terms of getting your dresses to fit better, you don't need to be too tightly bound per se. Any little bit helps, in terms of a girdle or a slip (or both).

Absolutely!! Wearing a slip makes the garment sit better..... and feel better to wear!! AND it covers up the panty/garter line!!

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

whatever you do, DON'T get a long line girdle! i bought an original 50's, mint condition girdle that came below my butt, and had garters on it, sitiing was difficult, peeing impossible! not to mention getting the darn thing off again at the end of the night! i had to wake my mum up at two in the morning for pulling power! however, it gave a FANTASTIC shape, and no 'lines' to see either! mine takes about two inches off, and finishes just below the bust.

oh and vintage is always better, for cut, colour and style! but then, i have a classic 50's shape, so most stuff fits me, as long as i don't wear a padded bra!

That sounds like what I need for my sister's wedding. It's in August though so that may be too hot.

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

...because in the summer heat, vintage clothes are hold up better...

My vintage stuff fares far better than the new when it comes to wilting, etc...

however, it does wrinkle a little more because the fabric is better quality, but that is a fair trade to me!

Re: Why Vintage Is Better.

The real deal is the best of course, but some nice retro fashions are available. We started a store precisely because we love the styles but couldn't find the vintage we wanted...

Cheers!
