the charleston

Does anyone here know how to dance the charleston? I kinda taught myself from watching youtube videos and the scene from "its a wondeful life" but heres the basic steps that i do

1. feet about 6 inches apart
2. step back on my right foot
3. kick back with left foot
4. step forward with left foot.
5. kick forward with right foot
repeat

But somehow it just looks like im stepping back and forth, even though i jazz it up and swing the arms and all, my freinds insist its looks real, but what are some other steps? i am finding it very difficult to find any information on steps etc.

thanks!

Re: the charleston

I had to learn this dance for a show I was in. I am not good with dance terms so I am not sure if I can be of any help. When I step down I twist my ankles so my toes point outward. I think that's a big part of the look.

Re: the charleston

It's an 8-count dance.

For men, start on the left.

1. L back
2. R step in place
3. L kick forward
4. L step forward
5. R kick forward
6. R swing back to middle (flamingo)
7. R kick back
8. R step back

For ladies, just go on the opposite foot.

That's a Savoy style Charleston.  The flapper style is the same steps, but the feet are kept very low so that the kicks look like steps.  You just can't put your weight down and keep up with the music!

Whichever style you prefer, keep the steps SMALL.  And unless you have plenty of room and know what you're doing, you shouldn't travel.

Have fun!

Re: the charleston

I dig charlestons and used to have a good routine w/a pal of mince. Side by sides, front to backs, hand to hands etc....I dig me some charlestons!
