Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

I'm an itinerant entrepreneur for the moment, but I can't abide PH going out in a puff of second-hand smoke. Yeah, I know TMBC promised that 2007 would be a turnaround year for the old town, but seriously, at this juncture I reckon some well-deserved encouragement for him and Smilin' Buddha Joe is in order. They have fought the fine fight, they're sticking to it when just about every other retro site on the web older than 6 years has completely folded its hands around the lilly and gone to dust.

So if you're passing by, toot your horn and let Smilin' Buddha Joe and TMBC know you're still plying the streets of our fair city, Port Halcyon. And maybe let the rest of us know what's going on in your life and make reacquaintance with one another.

Personally, I'm living the life of a 1930's adventurer, plying the world and looking for profit. Maybe with a bit more moral responsibility than back then, and a bit faster than tramp steamer, but just as seat-of-your-pants. You've not lived until you've about slid off the side of a gorge in Africa during a rainstorm with 135 other passengers on a bus. I go back soon, hopefully to be introduced to the King of the Ashanti by my buddy his cousin. And no I'm not freaking making it up. As Mark Twain once said, "Truth is stranger than fiction." In the meantime, I'm building a still to make essential oils from peppermint and other plants from our farm in Indiana to operate my budding cosmetics and personal care company. In order to do all of it, I had to stop living virtually and start living virtuosly, in real life and weaning myself off of here. But this place has such a sentimental value to me, it would be dead hard to see it go. It helped me keep my sense of wonder, the joie de vie that so often dies in middle age. I can't keep from getting older, but I can keep from being old.

Time stops in Port Halcyon. Why not you?

I'm still watching the old movies and reading the books on the old actors and actresses. Still spending a good amount of time in the 1920s to 70s. As they say Everything old is new again.

Same old, same old with me. It's great to hear from you Doc- sounds like you're living life right.

I try to check in here at PH every time I'm online, but that isn't every day anymore. Hopefully some more of our friends will stop in and say hi, but I'm starting to get that lonely feeling...

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

I'm enjoying it. As long as I'm still single, which has no end in sight anyways, I might as well do something fun with it. I had to take a break from cutting copper with a pair of straight snips. I've only got like 20 cuts left to do for my interior basket and tomorrow I get to do all the soldering (with silver solder, we're keeping it nice and pretty, she'll shine just like a new penny!)

Speaking of which Suzie, I'm sending a care package for you. Just some of my wares, but they're made of good stuff. It may be a week or two yet, I have to get this still made and cooking, some of the stuff I want most of all is blooming as we speak.

On with the roll call.

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

Well, let's see.... in the last year and a half I've changed jobs and gotten married. Work keeps me busy, and when not working, I'm caring for the hubby who was diagnosed with a form of epilepsy a couple months ago.

Yeah, that's why I'm not around much anymore.

Does anyone else miss the PM feature so you could "reach out and touch someone"?

Well, lots of changes for me this year! I am still living in Phoenix and working as an editor/writer, along with doing vintage-style modeling on the side.

I do miss the PM feature and it would truly make my day if PH was able build up steam again, no matter how slowly! I've met some wonderful people here and it would be lovely to remain in touch.

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

Well, you all saw it coming. Those of you who are still around, anyway.

Port Halcyon's days are coming to an end. Joe and I have had a great time, made some wonderful friends, and done some things that we'll always be proud of. We hope that someday we'll have a chance to revive PH, but right now we've got to do the right things for our families...and our aging, sleep-deprived bodies.

We hope that you'll stay in touch, let us know about interesting things you're doing, and drop us a line when you're in Philly or NYC.

See ya around...

Thanks for all your work and I think its best to pull the plug if the traffic is so slow. But thanks and I hope the people can find a common place to go to. Emily

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

I'm still here...ocassionally over at The Fedora Lounge, but it just ain't the same. Guess I'll have to close down my office at the Cahuenga Building...

I still have fond memories of 2003 when this place was at it's peak. Coming home from work at night and logging on here, bantering and learning(!) from so many of you gave even the worst days a lift.

Mr. Swank, I'm thrilled that you're living like Hemingway!

*sniff*

Well... I can't say I've been around much, but then I am not, except for summertime, when things slow a bit.

Cheers to all, especially TMBC and Smilin' Buddha Joe! Thanks for the good times and grand community. I will miss you all, and hope - truly hope - to run into y'all some time in the future.

(now would be a good time to play the last scene of "It's a Wonderful Life")

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

I still pop in here, to see if there's anything new happening. It's sad to pop in here, and see that nothing has happened for a month, or better, and still sadder that PH was created as a replacement for the old Atomic magazine forums, after the demise of that publication. I still embrace my modern electronics, while at the same time embracing retro culture and retro living. Sure I have a couple of rockabilly forums, and surf guitar forums available, but (and especially with rockabilly) both forms of retro tend to offer only a stereotype of the mid-50s (rockabilly) and early to mid-60s (surf guitar).

Matt

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

Even though I've only made a handful of annual visits in the past 3 years, I will be very sad to see Port Halcyon fall to the digital wrecking ball. A lot has changed since I joined in 2001. At that point, the conversation was moving at about the rate it does now, but gaining speed every day. In the real world, I was presiding over a weekly Swing Nite and was full of great retro things to post. It didn't hurt that I was a poor college student cloistered in a small dorm room with only music and Internet access for entertainment. It's been great to watch how things have changed and see so many interesting people come and go. TMBC and Smilin' Buddha Joe did a heck of a job running this town. Thanks so much!

Re: Roll Call Before We Play Taps!

I miss this place. I've hardly checked in, mostly as a firewall at work keeps me out.

My husband and I see as much of zootsuitcoot (Joe) and his lovely Theresa as we can (San Francisco is not close to RI, but we cope!) and I work full-time (lots of executive assistant things + HR + whatever else they throw at me).

We haven't been to a retro event in far too long...I wish Reading had been in the cards this year.

XOXO all. And I mean all!

=^.,^=
