Us vs. Them

Somedays I feel afloat in the sea of Juicy velour wearing, land rover driving, let the nanny raise the kid modernists of Marin County,CA. wondering if I'm the weirdo for dressing like a woman, staying home to raise my family and taking care of the domestic duties(and enjoying it)?!

Does anyone else ever feel alone and outnumbered in their retro way of life?  What do you do about it?

Re: Us vs. Them

I feel permanently alienated on this planet of moronic dullards mindlessly consuming all they are told to by equally mindless 'celebrities' in the pay of morally bereft fat-cats.
Seeing jeans around people's knees sickens me. Hearing auto-tuned, warbling non-entities and cash-worshipping, gun-loving imbeciles on the radio makes me want to kick bricks down their throats.
Being surrounded by cretins with not the faintest ideas of civility, courtesy, social responsibility or kindness fills me with rage and mkes me wonder if a mankind globally warmed out of existence would really be such a bad thing.
How do I cope? I don't really. I get increasingly more frustrated and will undoubtedly explode in a frenzy of grotesque retribution in the style of William Foster in Falling Down. I feel like The Omega Man but without the firepower. I am, ideed, a lost soul.
Thankfully, there are plenty of us around and I don't need to barricade the doors just yet.

Re: Us vs. Them

LS, I know how you feel. I hate riding the bus or train with rude, wanna-be thugs yelling random snippets of songs with vulgar lyrics. The pants-sagging is ridiculous, as is the rudeness. You're right. As I get older, I find myself withdrawing to the limited number of like minded folks around me.

LOL!!!!!

I am becoming one of those old fogeys I always hated in high school. The "turn that music down and sit up straight" type, although I always suspected they probably were right. At least I've also assumed the second part of that personality-type as well; the I'll-wear-whatever-I-want-no-matter-how-silly-you-think-it-is part and laugh at their stares. wink

Re: Us vs. Them

Sometimes I do feel quite the oddball out.  I recently went back to school, and sometimes my look is not accepted nicely - and these are folks in their late 20s to 50s (respiratory therapy school).  However, more times than not, I get compliments on my 'sassy' style.  A few of the ladies have even been 'dressing' up a little more rather than rolling into class with sweat pants and tank tops.

Luckily, there is a larger number of people just out and about in our who have taken on the vintage lifestyle.

Re: Us vs. Them

A little retro goes an awfully long way.  Maybe you're overwhelming them with the bandbox look, 8 am, day one.  I know I'd be terribly jealous and bitter if someone walked in and sat down next to me looking that fabulous.  I'd look so much worse by comparison!

I'd probably do a softer look at first, then go a little more retro every week or so til I finally came off looking like a magazine. That's not saying that I COULD, just that IF I could, that's what I'd do.
