We are spanning the globe this month beginning with Japanese folk and pop musician Umekichi (http://www.satoh-k.co.jp/ume/). With her Geisha style vocals along with the Shamisen, a Japanese string instrument, Umekichi presents the historical art of this instrument to the crowd by adding a new twist to the swingin' sound of Boogie-Woggie.

Hailing from the Czech Republic, Ondřej Havelka and his Melody Makers have been one of very few European big band formations in continual existence over more than a decade, and have been a considerable presence on the swing scene of post-Communist Central Europe.

JANUARY JONES — I'VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING (c.1965)

If you watch the TV series MAD MEN then you know the name January Jones. However, you may not be aware that from 1962 to 1975 there was a blonde bombshell also named January Jones. This original Ms. Jones often performed on the Las Vegas strip and appears here in a 1960s Scopitone (video jukebox) clip. Enjoy!

DONNA THEODORE - FEMININITY (1958)

This late 50's classic Scopitone music video features actress/singer Donna Theodore in a bikini clad song about perils of womanhood.
What would MAD MEN's Don Draper have thought about "Femininity"? We may never know. Today, Theodore lives in Palm Springs, CA and is a "motivational performer which is affiliated with the New Thought movement. Note: This video has a false start.

Video of the Week: MAX RAABE & DAS PALAST ORCHESTER
HALLOH DU SÜSSE FRAU (2006)

Raabe, in his Rudy Vallee-like voice, has been performing around the world for more than two decades. With his band, the Palast Orchester, Rabbe transports you back to the 1920s/30s recreating the music of the Weimar-era Berlin. They are also... well known for their mock Jazz Age renditions of recent hits, including "Lady Marmalade" and "Oops ... I Did It Again."

JET SET SIX: THE PERPETUAL BACHELOR (1999)

One of the best of the neo-swing bands of the 1990s, Jet Set Six always offered witty lyrics and tight arrangements. Musically where are they now? You can find John Ceparano leading the band SoundPool (www.soundpoolmusic.com) and J. Walter Hawkes (www.blatomaster.com) plays nearly nightly somewhere in NYC. Hawkes is also one of the composers for the Emmy-Award winning Nick Jr. TV show The Wonder Pets (www.nickjr.com/wonder-pets/).

MIGHTY BLUE KINGS:
DON'T LET GO (1998)

Founded in 1994, MBK proved to be one of the most popular bands associated with the swing revival. Playing to nearly sell out crowds, fans could not not get enough of their jump-blues Chicago sound. Then after releasing five CDs, including a live recording on Sony Records, the band broke up by 2000. Now a decade later Ross Bon and MBK are back and touring again (http://www.rossbonandthemightybluekings.com/).

SIDNEY BECHET: ST. LOUIS BLUES (c. 1950)

Along with his fellow New Orleanian, Louis Armstrong, Bechet (1897-1959) was one of the first great soloists in jazz. His throaty, powerful clarinet and his throbbing soprano are among the most thrilling sounds in early jazz. He went from being a pioneer of jazz in the 1920s to a national hero in France, where he spent the final decade of his life.
