I have taken to mixing Manhattans (both perfect and regular) with a couple of additions: a dash of orange bitters, and a dash of maraschino. I'm also considering methods of making one's own maraschino cherries, as I don't really like the awful things available on the market. Now, for "new" drinks. Here's one from the 1949 Esquire book: Trilby dash orange bitters 1/3 French (dry) vermouth 2/3 gin dash Creme Yvette [as it's no longer made, I subbed Creme de Violette] Shake with ice; serve up.

My own recipe is the basic (2 parts whiskey, 1 part sweet vermouth, dash bitters, stir or shake [yes, I know... but always to a foxtrot]with ice. I strain it into a cocktail glass with a cherry on the bottom AND about a teaspoon of the maraschino. I will try LD's version, however... sounds tasty.
