Ella Fitzgerald: The Early Years - Part 1
Written by David Talaga

Ella Fitzgerald: The Early Years - Part 1Who set the tempo for Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in Harlem's Savoy Ballroom?  Drummer Chick Webb's Savoy Swing Orchestra is best known as the place where Ella Fitzgerald got her start. Jazz critics will tell you that singing for Webb's dance-band format held back Ella's development as a vocalist. Bah!  Ella's sense of swing can be clearly heard on these tracks waxed at the height of the swing era. Did I mention that Ella was a dancer? This stuff is danceable. This two-disc collection of 43 dance tracks is easily a Three Fedora pick for all non-Lindy Hoppers, Four Fedoras for any Lindy-Hopper worth his socks.
