Red and The Red Hots - Gettin' Around
Written by Joe Wood

Gettin' AroundAs kids, we were all afraid of the Boogie Man, a spooky character generally found lurking in closets or underneath the bed. But since 1985, the Boogie Man has taken the form of highly acclaimed pianist and arranger Red Young. His name may not ring familiar, but Red has worked with some of the top names in swing, tickling the ivories and crafting jumpin' arrangements for artists like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, and Bette Midler.

On His third release, Gettin' Around, Young conjures up the boogie-woogie, feet-stompin' rhythms once heard in 1940s beer halls. The opening track, "Mr. Boogie to you," is a bit simplistic, with Red's piano boogie accompanied by only light hand claps to set the tempo. But by the second cut, "Moppin' & Boppin'," Red serves up the horn power and full-throttle vocals he's known for. The album also features a side-splitting duet on "The Temporary Blues," with Steve Lucky of the Rhumba bums, as well as a cover of Cab Calloway's "Boo Wah Boo Wah," and a Hammond organ-laden version of "At Last" that is perfect for any romantic glide across the dance floor with your sweetheart.

Gettin' Around highlights Red's raspy Texas vocals better than his last album, The Boogie Man, and reflects his true talent as a songwriter. This is one Boogie Man that you'll want gettin' around your home.
