The Astroglides - Channel Surfing with The Astroglides
Written by D. Beecher Hickox

Channel Surfing with The AstroglidesThe boys from Israel are here! This seven piece band really knows how to rock and how to have fun.

I didn't really know what to expect when I first tore into this disc, and now I just don't know what to say about it. It is a very powerful disc, from the first licks of the Tiki-esque "Tropically Disturbed", the first song on the disc, to the crescendo at that end of the last song.

Channel Surfing with The Astroglides has the same kind of feeling as The Ventures in Space, though the two sound nothing alike. Many of the songs have the same dark and eerie vibe to them, which is what I tend to look for in my instrumental music. But despite that eerie feel, the disc is still uplifting in the same way that a great blues song can make you smile. Comic inserts here and there, such as at the beginning of "Inspector Neer" and "Crime and the Law", also make the disc a little more playful and lighthearted.

Even with its 'dark side', Channel Surfing... will have no problem cheering you up. If you like old TV shows, especially science fiction ones, then you should really listen to this. This CD, The Astroglides third, was specifically based on old TV and movies scores (the liner notes tell you what inspired most of the songs).

Although the disc is largely 60s sounding, there are a few songs with a modern feel reminiscent of punk and even heavy metal music. This doesn't take away from the disc, but shows the band's diversity and flexibility. It is so well rounded in fact that I play it as a party disc as well as when I just want to sit back and listen to some good music.

I have do have one negative to say about this album, and that is that it could potentially cost you a lot of money if you play it while driving. It tends to make you speed quite profusely. I would recommend these guys to almost anyone who likes music. It fits into so many different categories that I think anyone could get to love them. I know I do.
