The Honeybees - The Bee Sides
Written by Dante Murphy

The Bee SidesWith apologies for the predictable metaphor…these Honeybees are sure to generate some buzz. The songs are bright, clever, and fun, highlighted by songbird harmonies and crisp arrangements. There's no sting here, just sweet, golden goodness.

"Seeing Green" is both haunting and tempting, a Siren-song of veiled vengeance rendered in the band's trademark, syrupy harmony—easily my favorite of the many enjoyable tracks on this collection of well-covered classics and charming originals. Vocalists Barb Clifford and Rachel Decker are the sugar-coated calling card of this musical honey-pot, their bright and genuinely pretty voices adding a new dimension to such classics as "Teardrops From My Eyes" and "Just Because".

The musicianship is sold throughout, especially the slide guitar work of Mark Braun on "A Fool Like You" and Shawn Koch's deft, latin-tinged lead guitar on "I Ain't Worried About Tomorrow". Husband-and-wife team Mike Hogeorges (bass) and Theresa Drda (drums) lay solid rhythm from start to finish, driving the up-tempo honky-tonk of "Little Jonah" and the straight-on rockabilly of "Road Trippin'". The instrumental "Ruby's Boogie" really showcases the band, giving the gals up front a chance to rest their voices—or jump up and join the hoedown.

The pedal is to the metal on "Outta Gas", another clever original that's sure to pack the dancefloor. "Hip Shakin' Baby", recorded long ago by the Johnny Burnette Trio, is a another fine cover, and there's a hidden bonus a cappella track that puts the collection to bed like a sweet lullaby.

The Bee Sides is unrepentantly sweet—maybe too much so for some—a wonderful new flavor alongside the mass of more traditional rockabilly and western swing. The music stands up to multiple plays, its light and cheerful air never failing to invigorate the listener. It's just plain fun. Buzz on down to the hive and check it out for yourself.
